Ok..I'm confused...

I figured I had some time to kill so I illustrated some of the major differences *Other than the Single action VS Double/Single*

First is barrel design,
the 1911 uses a barrel link that allows the barrel to drop out of battery once it moves in its full range of motion. The link is connected to the frame by the slide stop, which goes completely through the frame, It acts as a pivot point for the link. Here are some illustrations of how the 1911 cycles

The CZ 75 uses a crescent shaped cut under the barrel to do the same task. Thus eliminating a part and in theory making it more reliable. The slide stop has the same job in the CZ 75 but the motion of the barrel is retarded by a cut out in the frame.

Next is the design of the slide themselves. The most major difference you will see is the location of the slide rails themselves.
The 1911 uses a more "traditional" set up where the slide rides OUTSIDE the frame. It also has a bushing at the muzzle, I have simplified the this area on the diagram but it gives you an idea.

The CZ slide rides on the INSIDE of the frame, there are many who will argue the advantage of that portion of the design but I wont get into that.
The CZ does not have a bushing, the barrel fits into the slide and protrudes out a circular hole milled in the end of the slide. For the diagram I used a a CZ-75 SP-01 as that is what I personally have. The 75B does not have a FULL LENGTH guide rod but does the same job of guiding the recoil spring.

Hope that clears up a bit. I could have explained more and made better diagrams but I've had a long day... Feel free to use the images I provided.

Video of a cute nerdy gal explaining what makes a 1911:

1) Single Stack 45 ACP Mag
2) Single action trigger.
3) 3x safeties: (Beavertail, thumb/ambi, 1/2 ####)

Personally, I've always liked both the 1911 and the CZ75 series pistols.

Despite some similarities but mostly differences between the two types of pistols.

How can someone with very little gun experience identify a 1911 platform by sight etc.

Most look pretty much the same to me........

Kind of like breasts my friend. To a newborn, they all look the same, over time one gets to know the differences quite well, a little experience is all that's needed. You will get there, enjoy the ride.

at first, there is no beavertail security on the CZ .......

Ok, I'm with the OP... I really don't see too much difference between the two either. I'm also very new to the world of handguns and have very little experience though.

New question... What's a beavertail security?

Well, in a pure 1911 gun, there is no ramp to the barrel... In the CZ, there is. The ramp I write of is a slot running from where the bullet from the magazine travels up, along, and into the barrel. It is referred to as the 'ramped barrel' and is a very good feature, which reduces jamming. But, many guns that are in every other aspect 1911's now include the ramped barrel feature.

Also, in the CZ, there is no recoil spring plug and barrel bushing... At the front of the barrel of a 1911 gun, a step in removing the gun barrel and slide to first remove barrel bushing, usually using a bushing wrench. On the CZ guns, they seal the end of the slide and eliminate the barrel bushing.

LOL, but not to be confused, there also exists a more compact 1911, referred to as the 'Titan' frame, which also does not have a barrel bushing. The SAM Titan is an example, and sold in Canada with the 4.25"barrel sticking out past the slide.

Great info. Thanks!

All good posts you have from everyone, I personaly prefer for a 1911 platform a full size, but Man the CZ Shadow is way ###y looking ....) lolll....

:) let's gets as many guns you can in your safe :)

This is a problem with every sport / hobby I take up. Had WAY too many Airsoft guns at one point. I now have way too many RCs. I don't see why I will be able to stop at one or two pistols.....lol

Wow! Way above and beyond the call. Thanks!

Watch the video above, posted by Trigger the rookie...I couldn't explain it better!

Look at the CZ : fixed beavertail

Look at the 1911 : moving beavertail, meanning that if your not handling the gun in your hand, it wont fire, "beavertail grip safety"
