I happened across an old pistol today and was wondering if anyone could shed some light on what exactly it was.
Double barrel, break action, double hammer and trigger (triggers were side by side) and had 38 stamped on it. I couldnt make out all the information stamped on the top but it looked like the manufacturer started with trox or something....it was in pretty rough shape but got me curious. Hope this is the right spot for this post. Any help is appreciated

These are known as Gauchos, named after the South American cowboys. They were made in Europe - Spain in particular - for export to - you guessed it - South America, late 19th century. They were sold as "Pocket Shotguns" (the barrel walls are too thin for a solid bullet) and used with grape shot. The Gaucho's carried them on their belt to defend themselves against vermin - both literal and figurative... They usually had a belt hook on one side. There were some heavier ones' too, chambered for solid bullets, as well as very small ones using 5mm shells. And yes, this one is not worth much. It's in pretty rough shape. Still cool, though. I wouldn't ague with someone sticking one of those in my face...
