Old FN M98 30-06

She’s gorgeous, I personally wouldn’t change that beautifully checkered safety unless glass is optically required. One day we’ll regret swapping 3 positions onto true Mausers, will be like the restomod classic cars. :p

I would normally agree with that but as it's already been un-factory drilled I don't see harm in adding the safety.

If the rifle had been in original condition, undrilled and all, I would not have bought it as I need a rifle with a scope and would not bubba up such and old.survivor.

The other alternative would be to keep the original safety, scope it and carry the rifle with an empty chamber.

I have shot Dominion 220 gr KKSP, Winchester 220 gr Silvertip, and 220 gr Sierra bullets in quite a few 1:12 twist 30-06 rifles over the years. Browning, Husqvarna, and FNs, they all handled 220 with no problem at all.

Thanks Ted .... I knew you'd be the guy to answer that one. :)

Looks like we're down to only Hornady and Sierra for 220s. Any preference between the two?

All I know is I could never get decent accuracy out of mine when shooting 220's. Usually in the 3-3 1/2" range at 100. Seemed to shoot 180's just fine though.

I would just keep the original shroud & safety in a box somewhere so you can change it back to original if you sell it.

I have a box of 220 Sierra RN here at the moment. They are actually a tougher bullet than the Hornady in milk jugs.

That's what you should be doing anyway.

Good to know. I don't mind buying Sierra bullets especially after Hornady has cut so much back on it's old line up.

While I can see how that would work in your part of the world and appreciate the added safety factor, there are many times here that game would be seen at very close ranges and trying to quietly chamber a round at fast rate would be counter productive to the venture at hand.
