Old Oil Removal?

What do you all use to remove old oil that has almost turned into a varnish like consistency?

Try some oven cleaner on a small area. Maybe an SOS pad.
I use sos pads on my rims and bumpers.

Try some simple green and move towards solvents if needed.
Even some ballistol might loosen it up if you let it soak for a bit? Fingernail after that or some super fine #0000 steel wool...

Varsol or gasoline soak and scrub might work.

Ordinary engine degreaser and then rinse in HOT! water. Blow with compressed air if you aren't completely confident the water has evaporated, and oil liberally.

Never use metallic scratchy anything on guns unless you have no other choice. Even green Scotch Brite will take off the manufacturer's finish.

Sos pads are not scratchy. I got the tip from a guy who refinishes wheels for a living.

Varsol, naptha, laquer thinners and an old toothbrush usually do the job for me.

Curious what you are cleaning? Windex is water based, so with the ammonia/water combo, I sure wouldn't want the parts to flash rust if the liquid dries on the surface.

varnish like oil deposit on barrel. I read windex may work...if it could cause damage, not worth trying it.

Brake cleaner will strip the oil off anything but be careful because it probably won't do your bluing any favours either
