So, I have been reading about "The Load" from Ed Harris.

https://castbulletassoc.org/forum/thread/1387-the-load-is-13-grains-of-red-dot/

"The Load" asks for 13 grains of Red Dot.

However, it seems that Red Dot was made by Hercules at one point and now is made by Alliant.

And I have two different jugs/bottles of Alliant Red Dot here. One seems to be an older Alliant version .... and one jug says "Now Cleaner!". So, it seems Red Dot has undergone some revisions over time.

My question now is .... given a specific recipe that asks for Red Dot powder, can all those different versions of Red Dot be interchanged and used in that recipe .... and without blowing up my gun? Anybody know?

You can get variances from batch to batch of powders, if you get one that works go back and see if you can get more of that batch #
Yes there could be a difference:)

The whole point of "The Load" is that it is so far from max pressure that it can be safely used in virtually any medium bore rifle cartridge of conventional design. Might a batch of Red Dot from 1938 be slightly different than one made today? Yes. But used in "The Load", it doesn't matter.

The idea of canister grade powders is they are very similar.

But there is a small difference from lot to lot, and in this case, maybe from maker to maker.

If your ol best load was 21.7 gr, the new best load might be 21.4 gr. Not a big deal.

RedDot is exceptional powder. Efficient, energetic, entirely suitable for most handgun reloads. Alliant came up with a RedDot clone years ago in a *bulk* form called PROMO. Promo only comes in 8 pound cannisters but is essentially the same powder as RedDot, just without the red dots. And cheaper.
ClayDot is the same story.

Promo and Red Dot are found in pretty much all the big manufacturer's trap shells. I haven't heard of any discrepancy between Hercules and Alliant Red Dot. It does happen though, for instance old DuPont 800-X and IMR definitely do not track as they should if they were still very close in formulation.
