I'm fairly new to shotgun reloading and found recipes for loading the lyman 525 slug.
In these recipes it is calling for waa12f114 wads. Now I have heard winchester remodeled their waa12f114 wad and it is almost the same specs as their waa12 white wad.
I have tried loading a few with the white wad and my crimps are tenting. I am just wondering if perhaps the recipes are for the old style wad.
Can anyone out there tell me if there is a significant difference between new production yellow wad vs the white waa12.
I am strictly looking at OEM winchester brand.
Thanks

Loading slugs is always trial and error. Took me a while to settle on a wad, wad trim length and nitro card.

Materials aren't expensive so try another wad and have some card or another on hand to bump slug height.

The new yellow are pretty much the same as the waa12 maybe a few thousand difference in the length but I don't think wincherster makes them any more period in the 114 size and the new yellows maybe claybusters. They are not close to the original winchester yellow 114 which I would say your recipes are for so yes you are going to have capacity issues especially with slugs.
I have heard that the down range wad is identical to the old winchester yellow but have not compared them
Problem is I use down range in my 28ga and have to buy them state side when I am down. I don't know of a canadian source, maybe someone does
Cheers

Thanks for confirming that. I did find a source for the OEM yellow wads but I will cancel my order. Guess I will need to scare up some waa12r wads and use some nitro cards.
Thanks again for your help

A few years ago when I found out that the f114's had been discontinued and heard that Epps had a bunch left... well, I bought them out. Have enough to hopefully last me the rest of my life.

You are very lucky there. I'm hoping to find someone getting out of shotshell loading that might have a stash of them somewhere. For me 500 would probably last a long time.
I tried some waa12r wads but petals will be too thick I think. Those wads with a slug couldn't be pushed through my choke.
Back to the drawing board I suppose
