Looking for some opinions on the value of this Winchester Model 1894 .30-30 Win. It's a low 22,### serial number that according to the research I've done, places the date of manufacture in early 1895. It's obviously not in new condition and by the look of the front sight (pic inc.) I'd say it was replaced at some point a long time ago. Other then that, I don't know a lot about it. The firearm's action cycles just fine and the trigger releases the hammer. I've never shot it and likely won't do so.

I inhereted the Winchester through a family member a while ago and I'm possibly looking to find a new home for it as I'm indifferent to wether I keep it or not.

Any ideas?

Nice looking old piece. Early date makes it more desireable but still guess it around $475-or so. If it had octagonal barrel would put it closer to $650- These would be Vancouver Island prices and could go higher in Alberta. Cheers

Yup, probably left the factory as a rifle as it has a rifle butt and no saddle ring. The early carbines all had them unless ordered special. The barrel is from the 1930's or later as it had a ramp front sight while the earlier carbines had a blade pinned to the barrel for a front sight. Nice old hunting rifle. I have a 1917 DOM saddle ring carbine that has a 1930's production barrel on it. Value in my area is $350-$400.

Hello,

The serialized receiver was actually manufactured during 1897. It indeed was most likely a sporting rifle configuration with either a round, octagon, or half octagon barrel when originally built. It has no saddle ring and has a rifle cresent butt plate instead of a carbine butt stock as shown in the photo.

If you would like the exact day on which the receiver was serialized you can contact the Cody Firearms Museum. Usually the rifle was fully assembled and in the Winchester warehouse after a few weeks of the serialization date. They can also prepare a "Factory Letter" specific to your rifle. It will contain the date the rifle entered and was later shipped from the Winchester warehouse and the original configuration of the gun. An example is shown below. http://www.bbhc.org/explore/firearms/firearms-records/

The gun has absolutely been altered with everything in front of the receiver being added at some time after the early 1930's when ramp style front sights were introduced. If you posted detail photos of the stamped writing on the barrel I might be able to narrow down that time frame. When the rifle was re-barreled the caliber may have also been changed from the original.
