A friend of mine owns this old winchester that belonged to his father. He's looking for information on it. It's probably not worth much because of condition. It's in a 30 US caliber and there is no serial number on it.

30us ..That would probably be a 95 Winchester in 30-40 Kraig. Serial number should be under the lever. Probably made about 1905. Prices reflec condition....ouch!

This early '95(you can tell by the contour of the mag.) would probably fetch $500 in this condition, in any better condition it may draw $1000. We have 2 in the shop, one is in slightly better cond. and has a price tag of 650.00 and one in good cond.....$1250.00.

No, no serial number. As to the condition, my friend makes no apologies. I brought it up when I saw the pictures first, and his response was...my father hunted it hard, and my grandfather hunted it hard. For two lifetimes of real hunting, it ain't that bad....He's got a point.

I hope I didn't come across wrong on this one....just giving values....the '95(any 95) is a wonderful gun and a real throwback, I'd love to have any '95 and I would use it to hunt with, regardless of condition. I'd jazz it up with a period correct, side mounted peep sight(avail. from Buffalo Arms), and go nuts!!! Alot of '95s left the factory with the optional Lyman Peepsight, and I like the old guns much better than the Browning Repros.

You didn't come across wrong at all. Thank you very much for the information. I like old guns as well, especially savages, and I must confess, I've always been particular about condition.

My buddy said he didn't look under the lever for the serial no. but will do so tonight. The gun came from an American who came to Newfoundland hunting some time back. Don't know what happened but he returned without the gun, leaving it in my friend's family.

I'd be willing to bet he will get at least $1000 for that rifle and quite likely more. I havbe gone through a lot of 95 Winchesters and have one now, but have never even seen an original "flat side" before in person or listed here. They are quite rare as they were only made the first couple of years. The serial number should be just behind the trigger. The barrel should be 28" and the caliber .30/40 Krag. There were some made in .30/03 also, but your rifle is too early for that.

Earliest chamberings....38/72 and 40/82....then the smokeless curse came.....30/40, .303, 30/03, 30/06, 33 wcf,35 Win, 405 Win. there may have been others......I once had a chance at a mint 38/72(Flat side, large mag.)...but already had a mortgage.

oops...I forgot the most common chambering of all... the 7.62 X 54R....200,000 sold to the Ruskies around 1912 I think(the memory grows weak).

Didn't Winchester make a version of this rifle in .303 British also?

Yeah, My grampa killed alot of deer with his. Great rifles, hoping to get a bear in the spring with mine. Not a Brit, but an '06.

I really like those old 95s & have had several. Mostly 303s, the one I liked to shoot most was a 30-40 but it was traded away for a nicer 303!

Ben, I don't believe 33wcf was a 95 chambering ;)
Here's one in the scarce 30-03:)

No and Yes

According to Madis, Winchester never made a 303 British like the 1 in the first pictures.
Flatsides were for serials 1-5000 so that means 1895 and some of 96. The 303 British was introduced to the Model 1895 in 1898 when the model had a "Fluted receiver"(seniors pic in 30-03) which is seen most often.
.303 British Flatside 1895 NO
.303 British Fluted-side 1895 YES

While registering my grandfather's Winchester 22. I noticed the serial # was "7". Just thought I'd mention that...Carry on.

Interesting!
Winchester, back in those days, had a very strong custom shop business. If this is one of those rifles, it could add considerably to it's value.

I know where there is a "VERY GOOD" flatside in 30-40 Krag for 1000.00 and that is negotiable... And I have handeled a .303 in excellent condidtion... it sold for 1500 I believe.
