This has been very interesting. Always nice to see what makes people tic. I was raised in Sask where most of our hunting was done by pitting (different from pit lamping)Most if our shots were were at flying birds.
I hunted with my uncle who used a 20 ga. and I had a 12. those were the days before the 3 and 31/2 " mag. My uncle thought me never to shoot unless you see the eye of a goose and we never came home that I can remember without game.
I gave up ducks and geese a few years ago but I hunted with steel and never had a problem. Oyes Ben I learned never to shoot ducks on the water . Did that once and there is nothing colder then water in the Fall.Further more I never owned a water dog.

I think it is a personal choice for one to make . i usually don't shoot them on the ground anymore unless i have a single in and have a less experienced hunter or youth with me that wants to . i will yell to flush the bird then add him to the bag . big part is i find the buggers just hard to kill on the ground/water and easier to bag when on the wing . i cringe when i hear guys talking about blasting to large numbers of birds roosted up .there is now way of knowing how many cripples are created that way that will go a mile or two and then die . i rather pick out a bird one at a time .
just my $.02
