One Caliber fits all?

What caliber do you suggest?

I'm broke as a joke but I want to hunt this fall. I can afford one rifle and talking to the guys at the gun store has gotten me nowhere.

So here's my criteria:
- Under $1,000 (The cheaper the better)
- Preferably a caliber that will allow me to hunt anything from deer to moose.
- Ammo needs to be available at any hunting store. (I hate having to track down oddball calibers)
- Doesn't need to be purdy, she just needs to work
- Maybe something with iron sights? Then i can add a scope later on this fall if money allows.

I'm not against getting a used gun but have no idea what kind to look for. Gunstore salesmen keep trying to push me towards really expensive guns and most don't come with scopes, so there's more money down the crapper. :(

Suggestions? Recommendations?

I use a 7mmmag for my everything gun, really popular caliber and very available everywhere. Its good for anything large to small, well not to small. hav'nt hunted coyote's with it, yet, but soon i will;).

though a 30-06 might be good to, or 308. those would be popular and good for large to small game. some swear on the 270 but i dont know much about it.

i went with the remington 700 BDL, open sights. in 7mmmag, love it:D.

I voted '06 but would just as easily suggest a .270. Both are good for any game you'll hunt, in fact I once owned an FN .270 that was an old fellow that I know grizzly rifle for years. Ammo is available for both anywhere and reasonably cheap. I would suggest maybe a Steven's rifle if you can still find one for a good price, throw a good scope on top and use what's left of your $1000 and buy yourself a 12 gauge shotgun. You will be set for any and all hunting you will ever do in the Fall.
 
Well since you reside in Southern Ontario I suggest get a 12g with a 2 barrel combo. Then you can hunt upland, waterfowl etc with the smoothbore barrel and throw the slug barrel on when deer season comes around. Take a look at a Mossberg or Remington combo package and you'll have lots left to throw a scope on the rifled barrel.
Unless you plan on going to Northern Ontario for a moose I wouldn't suggest a rifle. Plus you can't shot a 30-06 down in your part of the world.
 
forgot to vote, well went with the 30-06. But dont know why there isnt a 7mmmag or 308 in the options?, or even 300winmag though might be to big for small game.

Exactly what he said. No rifle season down your way.....if you have tohave just ONE gun, pick up the 12 ga.

Now...if you DO plan to travel up this way for a rifle season, I would look at the .308. Ammo is as common as any, with the added advantage of multiple factory loadings for everything from target to hogs to yotes to deer to bear to moose, reasonable recoil, and comes in a short action rifle.

If I were you, I'd buy that .308 model seven in the EE right now....stock is kind of ugly, but the rifle is very decent, comes with a scope and it's 600 bucks with no tax.

Understood:). yeah i dont know much about the 270 obviously, but i know alot of people absolutly love the caliber, and swear by it bigtime.

same thing with the 7mm-08 people seem to love that caliber as well, but its not so readily availible like the others.

The most affordable way to get into it is with a Stevens 200 in 30-06. You can probably get the rifle for under $400 and a decent scope would be in the $250-$400 range. All told, you're set well under a G-note.

BUM pretty much sums 'er up. And with the savings, get a bunch of ammo from various manufacturers in different bullet weights. Once you find what shoots best in your rifle, buys a few boxes for hunting and burn up the rest for practice.
 
Your going about this wrong, if your on a budget forget what other people say will be best, and find the best deal on the EE with a rifle that'll work. Later in the future once your more experienced and have more money you'll know what you want/need and won't have to post to get everyone's 2cents, although sometimes it's interesting to see what other have to say.

I'm surprised nobody has suggested the old $100 14pound rifle yet :p:nest::stirthepot2::popCorn:
