so I'm shoping around for my new hunting rifle. I think I've narrowed it down to a rem 700 CDL in 30-06. with probably a leupold vxII 3-9x40.

and now I'm looking at the stuff inbetween.

seems I have a choice of weaver #35/36 2 peice base or a #98 one peice.

I asume the one peice will be more solid? and I assume it won't interfer at all with loading / unloading? or does it?

is there any reason to go for the 2 peice instead of the 1 other then a few bucks? (and maybe weight?)

Go for Millet

See if you can find a Millet Lite one-piece mount. All the strengh of steel and the stiffness of a one-piece. Looks like any other Leupold/Redfield mount but is specially skelitized(my word) for lightness. This style of ring will be better for your scope in the long run. I picked up a set last month at a gun show for $45 with meduim rings.

Lynx Rings and mounts.S.I.R. sells them very strong and light, both rings are adjustable for windage. They will never twist or stress your scope tube.

Another thought.

I like 2 pc. bases on my hunting rifles so I can completely grip the rifle at the balance point which on many rifles tends to be between the rings. Of course you must select rings high enough to permit your thumb comfortably thru. Also you must be comrfortable with the more headup position when shooting.

Here's my 700 setup which I like. With the action cut out for top loading on the Rem Mod 700, I find mine is excellent with turn in rings (Millet I think but can't remember what I bought). That's a 32mm scope bell.

Here's one of my Mausers set up similarly.

Hope you get your CDL - should be a good one.

I've used all the mentioned mounts on Reminton 700s and other rifles with good results, but mostly use the two piece Weavers. They have served on 375H&Hs down to .223s with no problems at all. The trick is to buy good rings. Weaver brand rings will dent the tube on you new scope if overtightened, but are quick on and off and are reliable. The best weaver style rings I have found are the Burris Z rings. They are stong, reliable and nice looking ring to boot!

Two Piece

I would go two piece

and I would top those Weaver bases with Burris Zee rings

+1

I prefer two piece Weaver bases, too. Use a Weaver #40A base on the front of your Rem 700 action & that will give you more room to adjust your scope for eye relief. Will also help if you end up using a scope that has a 'short tube' to properly fit in the rings on the action.

I am a bit partial to the Leupold/Redfield mounting system on rifles that do not dole out substantial amounts of recoil. If The rifle comes back with authority, then the dual dovetail gets the nod. Two piece bases are the norm, EXCEPT if there is some really long range shooting in the future for the particular firearm. Then it gets a 1-piece base with the 20MOA [or more] elevation dialed into the base. I have been known to shim these one-piece bases if a tapered one is unavailable. Works fine, without stressing the scope tube. Regards, Eagleye.

NOth of the mounts I have are 1 piece; a Lynx on my ShtLE 303/25 & a Leupold on my k98 bubba.
While it may not be an issue I think the one piece is better in terms of rigidity.
It's one less place for the accuracy to go south.
