One rifle, one calibre, one cartride.

My Remington 700 XCR II in 30-06, laminate stock and trimmed to 22"
Shooting 165gr AB's

But I still want a Marlin 308MXLR, chopped down and tuned up, with a VX-3 1.75x6 on it.

SAKO L61R in .375 H&H with 300 gr. Barnes/67 gr. of IMR 4064.

Close second choice would be the same rifle in .338 WM with 250 gr. NP/70 gr. of H-4831.

They're not laying around everywhere, and they may not be for everyone, but those are my personal choices for the criteria you presented. I don't know about ready made cartridges, with the exception of .22 LR I haven't used 'store bought' in decades.

If you had to choose one make and model of rifle in one calibre using one cartridge suitable for use in all weather for all North American big game, from deer to sheep to bear, what would it be? Not interested in load versatility etc...just sticking with a single set up and single load. Thoughts?
Depends on where you live and what you mainly hunt. I would chose something a lot different for hunting in the Yukon that what I would living here in NB.

Saying that ..... I'd probably chose a lighter weight 308 bolt action with a TSX load.

There's a big difference in a white tail deer and a polar bear. I know you're probably deciding on what rifle to get, but really, don't limit yourself to one tool in the box. A steak knife can spread peanut butter on a sandwich, but it's a fact that a butter knife does the job better.

One Rifle - Bolt Action, wood stock, 5 round detachable magazine, Scope BUT with some iron backup sights if your scope has issues. (your mileage may vary, but a Remington 700, a Marlin XLR, Savage, or a Ruger M77 - most common parts available if something breaks.)

One Calibre - .308 Winchester. Buy it anywhere, probably one of the widest ranges of bullet weights available, can be hand loaded down to a subsonic heavy 30 calibre 'Long Rifle' (like a big .22LR) and loaded up to a 220 grain Buffalo dropper.

My choice was a Ruger M77 Gunsight Scout as it met all of the above. It's no finesse rifle that will drop 1 MOA at 1000 yards, but it will hit <4" groups at 500 yards and do it all day covered in mud.

Oh… and its more compact than it looks in pictures :

Right...I'll narrow it down somewhat, as a single set up is what I'm interested in...and, truthfully won't be going after deer or polar bears...Needs to be a minimum of 30-06 180 g to meet minimum requirements in this neck of the woods for bison...will also be used for caribou, moose, possibly black bear, grizzly bear and sheep on a rare occasion...a tall order yes, but not impossible....suggestions that seem suitable include '06 in 180, 300 wsm in 180, 300 wm in 200. Thoughts? Thanks all for the input!!

For me it would be the M1 Garand with an adjustable gas plug so it can handle all 30-06 hunting and target loads.

An elegant, efficient semi-automatic with an 8 round clip, quick to shoot and fast to reload, all while having a light recoil for a firearm of its caliber.

Then again... maybe I am old fashioned...

Sako L61R or Rem 700 or FN Win (latter two in stainless with SS barrel) 340 Wby bedded in a Brown fiberglass stock, with a Zeiss 3.5-10 X 42 Victory scope...........good for sheep and goats right up to polar and coastal bears.

It would look a lot like this...............

I used to have the Zeiss Diavari 3-9 on it but it now wears a Leup 4-12 and it is in a 300 Wby, bedded into a Brown fiberglass Sako stock using Sako bottom metal and a custom built 4" mag box and throw lengthened to 4"

I've hunted a couple times out your way with a 375, but a 30.06 with 180gr Partition seems reasonable with your limits.

Geez, if you're old fashioned, what does that make me? I'd be going out with my custom Ross rifle in .308 British (.303 with .308 bullets). Get the best of the Ross platform with a little more power than a regular .308.
