One rifle, one calibre, one cartride.

One rifle/cartridge/load for the world would be a M70/.375 H&H/ 270 or 300 grain TSX. If you need a solid seat the bullet upside down.

North America is part of the world, so that's just a foot-note.

Nobody I know that hunts much of anywhere for much of anything only has one rifle or only wants one rifle. There sure seem to be a pile of .300s in outfitted camps though, owned by people that have hauled them all over the place and have plugged a lot of luckless critters.

I really like the .308" 200gr Partition. It is an excellent bullet - it is very aerodynamic, reliable and I have found them to have excellent accuracy. A .300 WM loaded with those bullets would really cover your needs quite well. Of course recoil will be somewhat of a step up from the .30-06 (assuming similar rifles) but is, imo, still very manageable.

I already own a rifle chambered in what I consider the best all-round cartridge for North American hunting.

BSA Royal Featherweight with 24" King barrel in 338-06.

I have to go with a 270 becoues we canot shoot anything bigger at home .and it would be a rugger tang safety model or a rem pump Dutch

NEF Handi Rifle in 222 Rem because if you read enough expert advice on these forums, you'll know that's all you need from moose to bear defence. If polar bear is on the menu, I may consider stepping up to the 243, as that's what the Inuit use, so it must be perfect. :D

the North American continent is a big place - (includingCanada and Alaska!)

To kill anything in that area with one rifle and one load would take something in 9.3x62 class as a minimum - I would probably settle on a CZ5500 in 375 H&H 300 gr. NP or X bullet.

you are right Canada is only the second largest country on Earth .... lol

I honestly wouldn't trust a semi-auto in extreme cold, too much can go wrong.
I think I'd stick with a Rem 7600 in 30.06. Also has iron sights in case your scope can't take the cold recoil or something.

If you had to choose one make and model of rifle in one calibre using one cartridge suitable for use in all weather for all North American big game, from deer to sheep to bear, what would it be? Not interested in load versatility etc...just sticking with a single set up and single load. Thoughts?

30/06; 180 grain Nosler partition. Boring, effective

When I was a kid most people I knew in Northern Ontario only had one centerfire rifle -- it was pretty much always a 30/06. There was also a .22 and often a 12 or 20g single shot cooey .. all kept in a closet - usually in the master bedroom. I believe black electrical tape was used first on a cooey stock .. before it started to be used on hockey sticks in Canada!
