Ontario Antlerless Draw Results

We have been pretty lucky..... Four guys booted so far in 10 years...... Only two incidents....

One was the aforementioned Captain Neck Roast.....

The other three I booted all at once..... I bought my camp when my ex boss and friend passed away..... Nobody else could afford it or was interested in our party..... The property has two cabins on it, mine which is pretty deluxe and sleeps 3, and the camp which sleeps 8 in bunks.... Both are powered by generators and have running water.....

When I made the purchase, 3 of my friend's family members approached me asking me to subdivide the 62 acres and sell them two with the camp on it (at a retarded low price)..... I was not comfortable with that as I felt that them controlling the bunk house meant they could deny people a place to stay...... Also, our camp had two leaders, my friend who passed and his cousin (great guy)..... When I bought the camp, I took my friend's place and the three got miffed that none of them were "promoted"..... Anyways, long story short, I charge a camp membership fee of $200 a year...... It helps pay for upkeep and in return, you and your family get access to 82 acres, and the camp with running water, overlooking the lake as well as a boat and use of the generator...... Everyone gets a key and can come and go as they please....... I think it's pretty reasonable...... Great hunting and fishing right there.....

Long story short, they got so offended that I wouldn't sell and was asking $200 that they went to camp in my absence and proceeded to remove everything any of them ever contributed to........ Regardless of whether they were the sole contributors or not..... Any of the antler plaques that were there and came from one of their deer were vilentlybtorn off of the wall, damaging the wood panelling...... So ya, gate keys were changed and they are no longer welcome....... But, in the 5 years I have owned the place, it's been peaceful since....... Just needed me to step in and do a clean up.....

The only arguments I hear now happen when someone eats more than their share of bacon...... The guys take their bacon seriously...... Lol

Yes indeed taking more than your share of the bacon is a serious offence lol.... Good on you for being "the guy" to take on the responsibility. Your $200 fee is More than fair for the offer.

Our group party hunts in the ml in December .The guy that shoots the deer tags the deer takes the deer. We put in the same amount of effort but do not share the meat. We are mostly tagged out most years. The ones that don't use there tag have likely missed more than one opportunity and it is usually there fault.

If that works for your group....that's good for the group. So does the guy that took a deer stop hunting when their tag has been filled? Why not share the meat if you don't tag out?

Opinions on this? If a group of 10 hunters has 5 doe tags let's say. You head out on the opener and dump a doe it gets tagged. Then you go out the next day and 3 more does step out doe you shoot??

Or you down a decent 8pt and the next day a smaller fork horn steps out do you shoot??

How doe it work in your group?

My group has an "if it's brown it's down" philosophy....... Provided we have a tag for it of course......

It's not the way I would prefer to do things, but the group pre-existed my participation and I don't want to be the guy that takes the place over and enforces my rules on everyone......

From the various comments made here it seems obvious there needs to be a very clear set of rules adopted when a camp is being created. Part of the problem, however, is in anticipating all the possible problems that might arise. Possible solution would be to establish an annual review of "new" problems. Maybe every 5 years revisit problems with existing rules.
In an old established camp it becomes difficult to create rules where none existed before. It can be done but all of the camp members must agree to the need for setting up such rules.
I have been fortunate over the years to have hunted with the same small group of hunters who have almost identical ideas of how to operate. The majority of our hunts have been for moose but the same ideas apply. When bringing some one new into the group we are very selective in vetting them first to make sure they will fit in. I have seen first hand in camps where I have been an invited guest how one wrong individual can make things unpleasant for the entire group.

Our rules are decided when the antlerless tag count is known for our group.
Either you share your tag with the group or you don't, no one cares, so long as it's known what the deal is before opening day.

99 times out of a hundred everyone shares their tags with the group and it's brown and down until tags are used up. Some guys also hunt black powder week so we try our best and save their tags for last but if it doesn't work out it doesn't work out and it's no big deal.

We have done this many times but we usually find out the someone that has issues says nothing until after the kill or hunt and many time becomes a bigger issue than it needed to be. Now the guy is to mad to hunt in the group or the group doesn't want them to hunt??? Better to establish a few rules for the start IMO

I will be "Buck" Hunting in zone 56

my entire group failed in the moose draw and well got buck tags for deer. Thought with the warm winter that animal numbers would have been up.

We are extraordinarily selective in who we bring in and are always upfront about the rules, crystal clear. We then confirm, the night before opener how many doe tags we have and specifics of how we will hunt that year in particular (things change based on the amount of doe tags we have). Usually its "brown its down", and at least half our guys have no intention of hunting after the rifle hunt so we try to use their tags first. If it doesnt work out, then fine, it doesnt. Our guys dont really care.

They are, across a lot of central Ontario, but I really can't fault the MNRF for being tight with anterless tags for a second year. Remember that it takes two years to see an effect from easy winter. All last winter did was ensure that the few pregnant does around didnt abort their fawns and that the weak, old, or, small deer made it through the winter easier. If this winter is easy again, then next year you'll see a notable increase in deer and tags.

cdn1 :when your tag is filled you are put to the drive. We have usually had two tags in the past each, this year only one.Come Thursday if the guy is nervous he may call for help filling his tag. There is always a tag for a big buck later in the week if one happens to go by you are obligated to shoot there will be a group tag to cover that deer. To answer no tag no shoot unless someone opens theirs up. We are ml so there is generally only one shot but there have been cases of two deer by the same guy on a drive.

During the Controlled Shotgun last year, one guy had some issues & tissues with the rules mid-hunt, too late, rules of engagement were set..

Just two of us at our camp. Safety is our number one concern. We plan and stick to the plan so we know where the other guy is. All work including field dressing and butchering is shared.
Hunting is supposed to be enjoyed and appreciated. Awesome, relaxing week that I can't wait to get back to the day after the season closes.
We have agreed however to invite a select few people who don't have access to a camp to join us towards weeks end of we haven't tagged a deer to help us out. Haven't had to do that yet though!

Cheers and good luck.

I got a doe tag for the 1st year in I don't recall how many! Since Canada Post declared my mail box unsafe to stop at, I now get my mail at a group box down at the corner and I rarely bother unless I'm expecting something. This thread reminded me that I am expecting something so I checked on line. I'd have run right down there but it's pissing rain. :)

Where I live in Keswick I see deer regularly, maybe like everyone else they are moving to the GTA. A premium site if it were ever possible would be near Humber college and woodbine racetrack, a lot of deer around there. If I still had my condo could have theoretically ranged from the 20th floor to the humber valley below where deer regularly grazed. Sadly and probably sensibly its a No to that lol.

Woah! That's a pretty sweet deal. I didn't realize the kind of setup you have. Good riddance to those guys.
