Ontario Fall Black Bear Hunting

Im not getting a clear consensus, some say yes, some say only if she is lactating some say its my call. Ill run it by the MNR but I dont' plan on harvesting the Sow or the cubs so it should be a non-issue.

The only way to find out if she's lactating is post mortem.

I forgot you guys only have a fall season, maybe it is legal then to shoot a sow with cubs (that year's)

Looks like she's moved on and my Junior bear is back. The bait was inactive from Sunday evening until thursday when he came back.

Damn...I think this is a different set of Sow and cubs, she seems a little leaner....they definitly took over the place....

The countdown begins.....Im going to sit in the stand Saturday afternoon, early evening....probably wont' shoot as think its going to be too hot out for the meat's sake.

P.S Bears really hate oranges.

Pathfinder - that looks like last year's cub to me - not this year's. For comparison here's a pic below off my trail cam of this year's - quite a bit smaller I think. Cute lil buggers.

Incidentally I was waiting out bears tonight but just squirrels and a large hare showed up while I was there. I had my 35Rem Marlin trapper with 200gr P+ loads. It sure seemed good to be back hunting again - though it was too warm really.

Whelan B,

thanks for that picture, That little guy is quite a big smaller than the cubs Im dealing with. I would not have to worry about leaving out a second year cub out as he should be able to den up and fend for himself.

I went out for a couple hours yesterday, I was experimenting with a honey burn and didnt' quite work out as my candle went out. Left the stand a little early (I had no intention to shoot in 25 C+ weather anyways). I big guy or Gal came out alone around 9pm that evening. I had left out the honey for him and he tore the thing apart as he should of. It looks like they are really enjoying the grease pad (Waferboard with lard and molasses spread over it).

Next weekend is looking a little better. The long range forecast is showing low of 13 and a max of 17 for Friday.

yeah - too warm to be fun too - I like to enjoy my hunting. Staying home tonight too because of the heat. I hunt pretty close to home - sites at 14km and 19km.

Wish U luck next weekend - keep us posted.

Honey burns...

Do your burns in the morning. Use a tomato juice can, the big one. Part honey, part water in the can. Use a Colman burner with the disposiable propane bottles. Don't burn the honey until its black...just carmelize it. Hang the tin in a tree. Brings the bears in backwards...:D

Good luck.

...and I have guided sucessful bear hunts. But not since moving to Manitoba last year.

Chase the sows away from our baits. Until Ontario reinstates the spring hunt, there is no advantage to a sow coming to your bait.

Back in the day...when there was a spring hunt, a hot sow was the best approach to bringing big boars to your stand.

So you dont' actually burn it onsite ?

I thought one would burn it onsite and that it would create a greater smell as it was burning ?

I don't do the burn while sitting in my stand, but do it while refreshing my bait in the mornings / early afternoon. The sticky sweet white smoke that comes off the can has a lasting effect. What's left in the can - brown carmelized honey gets poured on the ground beside the barrel. It cools into a yummy bear toffee. Then either hang the can out of reach, or take it back with me.

One of the keys to sucessfully bringing bears into my baits is a regular routine. The bears figure things out pretty quick and start to pattern you. I never put too many goodies in the barrel, so the bears are always in a rush to get there first. I've found that left-over bait allows the big bears to wait until dark before coming in.

...now to go fix my spelling errors - typing and beers are never a good combo .

I haven't hunted Black Bears since 2007 and miss it badly. The move to MB messed-up my 2008 season and I've only the budget for a moose hunt in 09'. I'll have to hunt vicariously through you CGN'ers, so keep those pics coming Patherfinder .

This past week my son decided to let this bear go and wait for a bigger customer. However he videoed it feeding for over six minutes with whispered commentary and then turned off the camera. This short clip is when it finished and was turning to trundle off. That's my M600 in 350RemMag which he borrowed for the purpose - the real star of the clip IMO. :D He shot a bear with it last year and likes it I think. Certainly no Jim Shocky vid but a start IMO.

We've used buttered popcorn in the past with good effects another food they have to stick around to eat. It's cheap too if you can hit a Costco and get in bulk.
