Ontario Fall Black Bear Hunting

I've seen smaller bears get real antsy around thebait when larger boars are quietly lurking about
Yep - 4sure - but my son figures it was just done as it emptied the pail. Very relaxed exit. No really BIG boars so far on the tree cam either - just 200- 250lb class at best. But ya never know eh.

Here is a bore that has been licking my apple buck jam he tried to rip the bucket off the top of the tree but I scared him off...... but the pic proves he's still around.....

I never planned on hunting Blackies this year but he has ate 1/2 acre of my neighbors corn field in the last week so he's got to go.....I have made a bait barrel and picked up some blackstrap and cheap dog food as well as some cheap cans of sardines.....I will be cribbing the tree to keep him on the same side as my blind also...

How big do you think he is ? the tree is about 8ft tall I believe

any tips to get this guy would be greatly appreciated this will be my first bear hunting experience.

If you want to shoot this bear, you could try hunting him in the cornfield if that is possible. If not setup a bait/stand & try to get him that way. There is no magic to bear hunting over bait. Just lots of work & patience. BTW it looks like a decent bear, but I can't tell what ### it is from that picture, could be a sow too.

Batteries finally gave up after 6 weeks and around 1000 (give or take) pictures. Im still looking at the same set of 2nd year cubs and sow. I have one Boar who shows the odd time and leaves quickly . Sat in the rain last friday night without results.

Will be out all weekend...hopefully not too wet.

Anybody ever have luck with bears coming out in the rain or do they stay behind cover and move less.

In my experience, they don't mind the weather. Be prepared for your bear to just materialize from the shadows. Their fury paws make them silent stalkers, and the wet gound makes them even sneakier.

Had a bit of exitement over the weekend.....We met up with the sow and cubs on the trail while leaving the stand...(yes I know I should of stayed in the stand longer). One of the cubs climbed a tree and the sow backed off not allowing any favorable shots to either my partner or myself. The little guy was super pissed snorting away at us from 30 feet up.

Took a few pictures and called it a day. (Ill post pics later this week.)

Bear Season opens tomorrow!

I did a final sight in with my Mossberg 535 fully rifled barrel and 3" sabot Nosler partitions at the range got to say if yogie comes out tomorrow he's done like dinner no picnic basket for him!...

Hey with the warm weather how long do you guys hang your game? I figure if I get lucky and bag one I will skin him out and hang him over night then butcher him the next day?...

You're lucky! The season in WMU47 doesn't open till the 9th of Sept and I'm anxiously waiting. I've had a sow with 4 cubs.......two of last years and two of this years. There is a 3 year old (approx) that shows itself every now and again but when the the sows around, which is most of the time, he stays away. Hopefully he shows himself when the lead can start flying!:ar15:

Same here, The younger bear has not been seen in a while. The territory is dominated by Sow. There will be no feeding for 1.5 weeks as Im away and not hunting this week, hopefully they pack up and find greener pastures...not shortage of bears in my area in any case.

Shooting a sow with cubs is a no-no...

According to who?

Im pretty sure they are last years. She pretty much abandonned one of them when we had him up the tree, im not sure she would act like that with a 6 month old cub.

Just compare Whelen b's pictures and mine (post 64 and 68)....big difference

I was thinking about the cubs on two occasions this weekend. The first time I snuck up on them while they were eating (by the time I figured where the sow was they had detected me and took off) The second time when he was up the tree and snorting at me...I could never take that little bugger while he was sitting on a branch helpless .

According to who?

According to the MNR.....at least back in 2007, before I moved to MB. I don't have a 2009 MNR hunting regs' in front of me, but I can't imagine it's changed???? And not just on a regulatory level. Think ethics, think about the future of bear hunting. Killing a sow before she's done with her cub(s) is wrong on so many levels....

Here's a pic of some twins, play fighting at one of my baits...the sow is not to far off in the distance. They are two year olds and not cute and fuzzy anymore, but still dependant. Would you shoot their sow....or either of them?
