just a reminder to everyone to be on your best behaviour this deer season if you are in wmu's 60, 61, 63a, 57, etc. area. along with my doe tag in the mail came a letter stating that the MNR will be conducting surveys this year on chronic waste disease (i'm assuming this is related to the elk hunt as it is in the same zones.). it also stated that "roving crews of MNR biologists and officers will be visiting local known camps to conduct these surveys on harvested deer".
so basically you can bring your deer in to be sampled or the MNR is going to show up at your camp anyways and ask for some samples. they want tissue from the head area. it isn't mandatory but if they're already at your camp, might as well let em check it out i'm positive you get a patch and a sticker or something like that.

They came to our camp in the Bobcaygeon area 3 years ago. They were students from Trent University taking samples on behalf of the MNR.
Yhe MNR was, however in to visit last year, checking licenses etc.

We had them visit our group last year. They were students from somewhere and they took a sample from the gums and below the eye, if my memory serves me right. we are in WMU 86.

thats probably the case in our zones. you had to read the letter i wish i could find it, it made me laugh at how they made it sound like they were going all out and visiting every camp. the MNR really only visits camps in our area if they have reason to believe illegal activity is going on usually. i guess it's just our turn for the sampling this year.

We stopped at the road check in Espanola last year...I dont' remember if they even checked the tag..never asked for liscences...just wanted a piece of skin from inside the cheek.

Where near Bobcaygeon do you hunt? I have a well known camp there.

Dave.

None of those areas, but we came across a large bull moose one season. Out of the vehicle and got really close to it. Took half a role of film before hearing a truck coming. We dashed, thinking we'd come back opening day. Truck that stopped us was MNR. Checked thoroughly. Back at camp we mulled it over. A light came on. Back in the truck and back down the road. Moose still standing there. Decoy that it was!! And not a single pic came out for some reason. Damn thing was real looking. head moved and everything. And we were about 15 feet from it. In our defense, it was dark as hell. :)
Area 48.

The CWD team checked our deer out last year, stopped in to the camp three times before they could check them out as we were out hunting!! If you shoot a big buck and want it mounted don't let them touch it as you will not be happy when they are done doing their tests.

now i'v never heard of a moose version, but i've seen a monster buck wich turned out to be the same. we call these hollywood bucks. or i guess in your case hollywood bull. not surprised that they've started doing this for moose. road hunting is a seriouse problem in our area.
