Ontario Moose Hunt - What's Everyone Going To Do Now?

I agree that wolves are harder on the moose than bears! Just saying that a bear hunt is another option in the fall, and one bear in my freezer is one less bear to harass the moose calves in spring.

Depending on the time of year. I suspect (only my opinion) that bears are harder on moose than wolves at the time calfs are being born. In winter, yeah, certainly wolves are more the issue.

there are an awful lot of factors involved here, and they change from WMU to WMU. Making changes on the licenced hunters only, is not the solution. It may help, but it won't fix the issue. That is my concern with the MNR. The fact that they are underfunded and can't get the right info in the first place to make educated decisions, and are only making political decisions is my other concern.

I hear ya. I've never been a bear hunter, nor predator hunter for that matter. Buut, my biological hunting clock started ticking, so I began predator hunting last year. (Great excuse to buy more gear too right?!)

And lately, I've been thinking that a bear skin rug would look reeeally nice in my cabin.

:)

I said quite a bit in post #47. I will add here that the native issue is a contributing factor, an issue the politicians and the MNR has zero balls to tackle. The Natives get away with what they do because they can, and no one takes them to task. The Natives are like anyone else in the world they are opportunistic and will take advantage of a beneficial opportunity. Can't really blame them.

Yes wolves are hard on moose and deer and anything else they can catch for lunch. I have had them following my dog down the driveway. But if you think moose "calves", especially the very young, are not preyed upon heavily by bears, you have hanging around with the animal rights folks for to long. Bears have a definite impact on moose calf survival rates. Like the Native Folks wolves and bears are opportunistic and will make a meal out of anything they can.

I personally think that in every shortage of game, hunters are last responsible and usually first to blame.
Predators are somwhere on middle of the list.
Human factor is right on top of list but not as the hunter one.
Polluting, destroying natural habitat and other effect on game population took their tool.

From what I saw over the years growing up and living in Ontario the only issue with the moose hunt was the people managing it.

Before I left Ontario in 2013 in the last 5 or so years I saw more moose in the areas I hunted and fished in than in the 25 years previous and I was not a moose hunter.

I can agree with this statement. I hunted moose for many years out of WMU #38, we took a lot of moose out of that WMU over the years. Then I bought land and established a camp in WMU #49, moose were plentiful and tags were scarce. The tag allotment increased in 49 but so did the moose population, the camp property holds a very healthy moose population. I had opportunity to hunt in WMU #38 a few years back. The moose hunters are scarce as the tag numbers are very low. But the moose population appeared to be higher than when I was hunting there regularly years ago, we seen many moose and had no tags for them.
I live in NW Ontario now, the moose population in WMU#5 is very low. I hunted in the Armstrong WMU# 16C for about 5 years and the population has dwindled there as well. The deer are also on the decline but by southern standards we have lots. We appear to have an abundance of bears and wolves. My garbage cans are never safe from the bears prying claws and I have to watch my dogs closely as the wolves are always trying to lure them into the bush.
So yes I can whole heartedly agree with the phrase that we have a "Management Problem".
