Ontario moose ... New Rules

another problem, with no transfers,if you drew the tag and then something happens like a medical problem you have just thrown $250 away and ruined the hunt for your group

Such is life. Currently if you had a medical issue the day before opening season, there would also be no transfer.

The new system is a step in the right direction, and the only way to give everyone the same opportunities, not punish people for not hunting in a party of 10.

sounds like the mnrf is going to do what they want anyway.i read the report from the moose hunting reviews that they held across the province. the majority of hunters they asked told them to leave the group application alone and do something about the unregulated native harvest so what did they do,cut out the group hunt and denied the natives are a problem

Another thing they could do is go back to credible aerial surveys.

I lobbied for a moratorium on cow and calf tags. If you want to increase your population, stop shooting females. Pretty simple concept, but most folks dont want to deal with lower chances of success in the short term.

To my knowledge, Ontario has the only system in North America that has a group draw, and one of the only ones that shoots females, and here we are complaining about moose population declines.

We certainly are not the only ones with a native population.

From what I gather, all tags will be based on a point/draw system, so I don't know how many people will actually apply for a calf tag. I know I certainly won't. Quotas will still have to be set, and we don't know what they are yet.

A moratorium on cow/calf hunting would certainly put an end to cases of mistaken identity. I was talking to a C.O. last fall, and he said he had 2 or 3, can't remember which, cases of cows being shot as calves to investigate that day.

gov't can't even stop illegal rail barricades, where are they going to find the balls to deal with the native moose harvest. Its not so much the mnr's fault. Its the entire tactic of dealing with the native population that the federal gov't sets.

as for the group application, I'm sure all the big group guys would love for it to be left alone, but I and many other individuals and small group guys are very happy its now a fair playing field. Its great when your in the special group, but sucks for the rest of us. You group guys have had your way for years, I'm glad its over.

Yeah, that was part of the plan, I'm sure, but there are quite a few factors - I used to hunt WMU 28, sometimes 29. I think they give out under 10 tags per unit. Add to that the fact that moose are just too frikkin' big and I'm too frikkin' old.

I took eight archery bulls in 29 over the years... and I'm getting up there too... just means an extra trip out of the bush... no way I quit... at least not until 6 buddies carry me out.

Regarding revenue, how many licenses are sold in Ontario in a year? 200K? That works out to about $10M @ $50 a pop - peanuts to the government. Outfitters would be affected, but with the spring bear hunt back on, increased turkey numbers, and maybe a campaign to reduce wolf numbers through guided hunts, they could probably make up the revenue.

Outfitters are going to get a big boost from the current climate and regs... there are more frustrated residents looking for guided and outfitted hunts that come with guaranteed outfitter tags... a good situation for booking hunts.

The calf tags will likely require less points to obtain and are cheaper to buy, so there will still be folks applying for them, sadly.

The Ministry should be able to give you at least a ballpark figure as to the number of calves harvested annually. I have a sneaky feeling it is quite low. What (I suspect) is more of an issue is the case of "mistaken identity" where cows are shot thinking it was a calf and left in the bush - but this is only a gut feeling, not based on any observations or data.

Not sure I understand these new regs are they saying a bull tag in 2021 will cost a resident over $200 close to $300 if I'm lucky enough to draw a tag?

Correct. However, in the years you are building your points, you only pay $15 to apply, as opposed to $50+ currently.

Thanks for pointing that out been paying for the past five years and only drew one bull tag but I should be due again this year as it will probably b my last moose hunt

I don't know how it was in other groups but we always entered as a party and it wasn't necessarily the longest suffering guy who got the tag. We had one older fellow who hadn't drew a tag in 25 years of applying, another one drew 2 tags in first 7 years of hunting with us. I don't buy the "computer generated" list of longest wait time despite what the MNR says.

When we actually filled in a cow as second choice quite often a group member would get a cow tag even if we did get a bull first choice?????????? Once we stopped putting in second choices we either got a bull or we didn't go. Being a simple program used for selection it simply made mistakes!

You didn't get a bull tag cuz the quota was already given out , hence the cow tag since you were successful in being drawn which would also be given out until that quota was also gone.

But some years we would get a bull and cow in the same group. But like you say maybe there were cow tags left that others did not apply for. Anyway this is the last year I will have to worry about it. Something new is always better.
