Ontario Moose Tags,Who Got Em !!!! I Did

We are all set this year for Timmins Ont in the Bow season. ..:rockOn:I called a Bull to within a few feet of me last year (no tag for it)

Man, you guys are hurtin' there in Ont.! 13+ years waiting for a tag for a bull moose? UNBELIEVEABLE!!!!! Even with our draw system here in Alberta, there are zones where we can get bull tags EVERY year. Now, I will admit, some of these zones are tough to access (swamp, swamp, and more swamp), but they are are not un-huntable. I'm not bragging, or gloating, it's just hard to understand. I grew up in Thunder Bay, and left when I joined the Cdn Forces in 1978. Times change, I guess. Anyway, the best of luck to all those who are heading into the woods this fall. Hunt hard, hunt safe, and have fun!!!

Ontario has a population of 13 million (almost half of Canada) and a moose population of maybe about 100 000 IIRC. Annual issued adult tags are about 15 000 off the top of my head. You do the math.

Also, if you want an adult tag, you can get one, but not everyone wants to travel long distance to do it. And EVERYONE can get a calf tag, almost anywhere.

We have areas that you can get a Bull tag every year, but people prefer to hunt closer to home, which in most cases is the higher populated areas, that have low or no moose tags.

As a first time applicant to the draw we got a cow tag and have the option on August 15 of purchasing a bull tag in the same WMU.
Believe me when I say our WMU is closer to Hudson Bay than Thunder Bay, on the last road or more appropriately the most northerly road in Ontario.
So the tags are there. They're just half a country away.
Talking with my partner today, we're both having second thoughts and may opt to hunt a calf closer to home.

Got a calf tag, again. From the stories and personal experiences I've heard, I could be in for a long wait to get a cow or bull tag. Even being in a group doesn't help.

Oh well, half the fun is tracking, calling and seeing the moose (getting it on video!), the other half is having fun with your friends/relatives being at hunt camp :)

1st time in 22 years for me personally, got a bull tag for 56.

Thankfully, the other guys generally draw. Some have drawn three times, and I got skunked.

Well, this year, it'll be my turn to tag the bull, no matter who shoots it.

Yeah, Ont is a huge province, that's for sure. I don't mind travelling to hunt, whether it's in AB or elsewhere. And I do understand that time can be a factor, too. We're pretty lucky here. There are a lot of zones where we can hunt moose with archery gear, on a general license (although these are getting fewer all the time), and there are zones that we can drive to in less than a day, where you can draw a bull tag every second year. And I completely understand the population #'s vs moose #'s - we've seen the changes here, too.
Anyway, have a good season guys.

I got a bull in 03.

It is kind of excruciating though, I don't really have a gun for it. My 6.5 swede seemed fine for calves, but all of a sudden I feel a little undergunned.

The wife has authorized a purchase at my discretion and I have spent all night looking at everything from Savage to Sako. I told myself that it would be a CZ in 300WM if I got a bull, but the tag showed up and a Sako A7 in .30-06 is whispering my name all of a sudden.

I should have bought the gun before the fever kicked in....

The swede will be fine. They are not bullet proof. Load up some decent bullets and go hunting.;)
