LOL,that's awesome brother.
I got a male or calf,
Get one every second year...haha

NL of course, where the Meese are plentiful.

Good luck on your hunt!

very few moose left in Ontario and the few WMU's left that have moose, well their reserved for another shall we say group of hunters.

cow moose hunting? i ve seen that in quebec too ... how can you chooose to shoot a cow if the population is so depleted ... if she is with a calf still lega?

Calf tag for WMU 56.... guess we'll be drinking be and doing a lot of practise again this year. Hopefully my camp lucks out better for Deer.

Available tags are not "Stats." A friend of mine flys the counts... there are lots of moose.

So how many moose is "lots of moose" smart guy?? Can you define this number please. How far away from your cities does one need to drive or fly to find a few mature bulls to choose from? Or are you just lucky to find any moose? The very fact that you fools are applying for draw tags is proof the moose populations are so depleted that demand for moose outstrips supply. This is not sustainable. Do we agree? And yet we have people happy to be drawn to shoot a cow or an immature moose and deplete populations further! You're applying in a draw for an opportunity to consume an already scarce resource. Don't you people see that is a symtom of broken wildlife management?

If there were 100 moose in the whole province your incompetent government would sell 1000 draw tags and I'm sure they could sell 10,000 more. How desperate you folks are to shoot moose is nothing short of irresponsible. It is irrational behaviour to want to kill cows and calves that if left to live and breed would boost your populations 10 fold in a few carefully controlled years of bull only hunting with strategic zone closures and tradable landowner only tags.

In 10 years the only moose antlers you will see will be hanging on a wall and it will be the inevitable consequence of over harvest of calves and cows which take a relatively long time to reach maturity and conceive newborns in relation to deer.

I'm displeased that a man of your experience cannot see the outcome. It couldn't be more clear than moose reaching absolute threshhold...the level at which their numbers are so low that without serious intervention they cannot naturally recover.

This will not be popular but I feel that the entire moose season should be closed (it was in the 1950's for a year or two IIRC) for a prescribed number of years in Ontario to determine the actual affect of sport hunting on the moose population. No one can predict accurately the outcome of such a closure but I think that considering the other factors affecting moose numbers the affect of sport hunting would be quite minimal. I also think a complete closure of calf hunting would help a lot to. It also makes no sense that a cow moose with a calf at side can be shot legally by a tag holder (adult cow) and leave the calf to fend for itself. But there are other factors to consider besides harvest. In the late 1970's and early 1980's when I started moose hunting the moose numbers were comparable (about 85,000 animals) to now and the deal was one tag equals one moose. I think around 1982 it went to two licences to cover one animal. Even with those regulations the moose numbers were somewhat stable. Something has happened in the last 15 years to cause some low birth rates and lower moose numbers in traditional strong holds. Like I noted earlier eliminating moose hunting for 2or 3 years would isolate one factor of moose mortality and could allow determination of what could be the cause of the decline. This won't fix easy and some pain will be involved to get back to the glory days of Ontario moose hunting.

I don't hunt moose myself so this may seem a little one sided, but from what I have read and heard.............

There may be a moose number (population) problem here in Ontario and if the government lets hunters shoot a baby moose (calf) or mother moose (cow) plenty of hunters are going to do just that.... just doesn't make much sense, you can't have it both ways. Shooting the breeders and their offspring won't get you more moose.

Hunters are supposed to be used to manage our resources not deplete them.
A good farmer isn't short sighted and would never allow that. just my 2cts...

The MNR should with their wisdom go and paint numbers on every moose so when a hunter is lucky enough to see these, " lots of moose " we will know how many actual moose we have in Ontario. BUT KNOWING HOW OUR MNR WORKS THEY WOULD SCREW THE NUMBERS UP.
