It became illegal to hunt wild pigs in Ontario as of Jan. 1, 2022.
The prohibition comes after a regulatory amendment by the Ministry of Northern Development, Mines, Natural Resources, and Forestry (MNDMNRF) under the Invasive Species Act of 2015.
Landowners (or agents acting on their behalf) can still protect their property from damage caused by wild pigs, including for the purpose of maintaining biosecurity. A person who captures or kills a pig for protection of property, however, must immediately notify the ministry and provide relevant information.
Those who shoot a wild pig for protection of property, must also ensure the pig is a wild pig, and follow all relevant federal, provincial, and municipal legislation regarding trespass, licensing, and discharge of firearms.

Ah, of course. What could go wrong? A destructive invasive species should be protected at all costs- they're not originally from here, so we must ensure they are allowed to destroy the environment around them accordingly. As we do with everything else...

They believe that if the pigs are shot individually the rest will soon become reclusive and spread more rapidly. They say that capturing the whole passel will prevent the population spread......... I want some of what they are smoking!

This might be more aimed at preventing individuals from running canned hunts and releasing pigs to hunt on private properties. Having farmed pigs I know that sooner or later they will escape. It looks like they can still be shot by individuals with cause. I think any wild pig should be put down if at large.

One issue with the pigs is they are very smart and will go fully nocturnal to avoid hunters... night hunting would have to be allowed, along with the use of accessories that make those hunts work (NVG, thermals etc)...

Never mind invasive wild pig my neighbor has a pot belly pig that loves to raid my chicken coop. That's one I would like to put on the barby . The MNR in all their wisdom go figure?

I don’t think much can be done to stop them once they establish a foothold, there was an episode of Meateater where they followed a guy that trapped wild hogs and he said he sometimes trapped a couple hundred in a day and it made no real dent. It was something like that for numbers iirc.

The longer they wait, the harder it will be to get a handle on the problem.

I am not so sure why is so hard to grasp a concept - shooting one or two out of a sounder makes them scatter - they spread and multiply - not going to re-group - have to trap the whole sounder to stop them. Shooters are typically not very effective at that - trappers are. From multiple other jurisdictions that have tried to stop or control their spread.

Might have "fun" shooting at them - might try to use as justification for night hunting gear, etc. - is just no evidence, from anywhere, that shooting at them has worked as a control measure. Europeans have been fending these things from crops for multiple decades - shooting, dogs, etc. does not work, like trapping does.

It's not hard to grasp the concept. It's hard to believe the government is actually going to apply it effectively.

Some guys outside Ottawa shot a wandering Pot Belly Pig. Trouble was it was still on the owner's land.
