Ontario-No Hog Hunting

It's not hard to grasp the concept. It's hard to believe the government is actually going to apply it effectively.

I guess you never followed the news story about a sounder of hogs NE of Toronto near Pickering that was successfully baited and trapped by MNR. There is a large parcel of land with decaying houses and a couple villages which was expropriated for an airport that was never built. What land that isn't actively farmed, is returning to the wild. Some hogs found the place and were spotted over time. The MNR found them, isolated them, lured them and trapped the entire herd. Mission accomplished. Moaning and dripping about bumbling bureaucracy just reinforces your anger and poorly informed utterances.

The problem is that they will not be successful in catching the whole sounder every time. The ones that get away will become extremely wary. They will probably slow down the spread initially but eventually the issue will become too big for them to control. They are here, get used to it.

Why worry about it. Carry lots of ammo and a shovel. Unless of course you have freezer room. This is not natural in any way shape or form. MNR has no say as far as im concerned. I sure as hell will not be reporting anything. Because it didnt happen. Enjoy your day fellow gun nutz

Those who shoot a wild pig for protection of property, must also ensure the pig is a wild pig, and follow all relevant federal, provincial, and municipal legislation regarding trespass, licensing, and discharge of firearms.

I only shoot escaped tame hogs...:)

So there are no more wild boar in Ontario now?

Sooo....let me get this straight.
It's illegal to hunt them because of reasons.
You have a herd of wild pigs on your property.
You are suppose to pick up the phone and call the MNR, "your call is very important to us please listen to the entire message as our menu options have change....press #12 if you have spotted wild pigs in your area and someone will call you right back....
Whenever they call you back...then they will "be right there" and set up bait and traps and then have MNR officers monitor said bait and traps on a daily? weekly? basis and then when they figure they have captured enough pigs they will come "right back" to take care of the pigs and then take down traps.
There are a total of 184 Conservation Officers covering the ENTIRE province of Ontario....but I suppose the summer students could do this.
All for this for the low low cost of what?????
All of this will surely "flatten the curve" of the invading wild pigs.

But hey, whatever ya do, don't shoot 'em.

You are allowed to protect your property from damage.

I like the shovel idea

To much work.

There's a reason why I don't go crazy nor overboard for coyote hunting on my property.... they clean up anything I leave behind. The fishers, crows and vultures do a good job cleaning up as well.

And the deer population on my property is still very healthy and abundant.

I said 'mission accomplished' for all the piggies counted on cameras in that bunch. I don't know where these ones came from, or about others. But where there is one roaming pig, there are at least a dozen more.

Mmmmm bacon
Pork chops
Jumping Jesus when I was I italy I ran one over with car ....all the people were happy ...
All I have to say is about 15 of us eat like kings ....holy Hanna it was so goood!

Ya ya let the population go bonkers .....all I have to say is yummy

I don't believe they have the resources nor staffing to make this work.

While they are trying to catch the entire sounder, they forget that mature boars only spend time with a sounder (sows & their offspring) to breed, and will then move in search for another sow (sounder).

You can also look at youtube videos & see that catching the entire sounder is not an easy task. Most of the vids I've seen do not catch them all in one go even with cameras & remote door releases.

IMHO this initiative is doomed to fail. They will then go back to shoot on sight...

Did the mnr say what they did with the trapped hogs? Slaughter, relocate? I'm just curious as to what their plan would be if they do start trapping them.

That's a great question because I am fairly certain there are strict health regulations of what a proper abbotoir can accept for processing. Texas can afford to have slaughter houses just for wild boar. Few places can afford it really.

Livestock cannot be mixed with farmed exotics, feral boar are another matter altogether.
I think they were forced to kill and bury them under a covert cloak. Maybe burn them??
