ontario spring bear hunt

I'm hoping to use my brother's Ruger Model 1 in .338. I've got a bait site that had a few bears coming round in the fall. I'll clear out a better trail to it and try to revive it in the spring.

And I'm about 25km from my house, so I'll be doing every weekend if possible.

You northerners are lucky. I'm debating whether I want to book off a week in May or June. A buddy and I will be back packing out of a truck and the area we will be hunting in is about a 10 hour drive. Since we're traveling light I'm going to bring only my 45/70 and 458 wm. My buddy is still searching for his first rifle. He's never been hunting so it'll be interesting

Haven't decided which week .... Going to hunt out of the camp in tweed / tamworth area.... Looking to use it as an excuse to buy another new rifle, likely a 300 win mag or 338 win, but if one of those doesn't pan out I will take the Ruger scout in .308 out....

May 1st til June 15, live in the Sudbury Area. Using the old Marlin Model 1936 30-30 with 170gr PowerPoints and the PSE XForce Vendetta XS with Carbon Express Maxima Hunter 250s and 100gr G5 T3 (worked very well on last falls bear).

always good to make plan during the winter about spring bear hunting ... wife was talking about it too ...

her load with her 30-06 is ready. now will it be 9.3x62 or the 375 ruger that is a good question ....

We live in bear hunting. But on the other side of Canada. Lol

We start as soon as mother natures says it's time. Usialy near the end of April till we are tagged out.

Girlfriend will be shooting her 243 with 100partitions over some 4350.

I may take my 375ruger to test out them 235g TSX I got.

Then if I am really lucky for number 2

I want to try my lead cast 30-30 loads.

wife wants to try that but i still do not know ... we are in grizzly country .... well a good back up rifle may help ...

Going for archery grizzly this year also.

Archery equipment is lethal on game... the difference is the lack of shock (or knockdown power, if you prefer), which means there are a few extra potentially devastating mobile moments after the shot... a shoulder carry isn't a bad idea where grizzlies are present... I have never carried one when hunting blackies... Although there were a few times when I wished that I had one.

i guided few archery hunters for caribous and black bear, i love bow shooting also, yes i read your soon to be adventure: your grizzly will be a little bigger and larger than ours. yes carrying an extra rifle can be a good idea, but better practise a little before going in the field.

... but better practise a little before going in the field.

IME, practice is usually not the issue... controlling your composure at the moment of truth, is. So many hunters, loose composure which leads to bad decisions at key times and a lack of focus when executing the shot... unfortunate on a 100 pound blacktail, "really" unfortunate on a 1000 pound bear.
