Hello:

I have just started to look for a open gun. I have tried 2 open guns. Almost snapped up a used 40 Caspian which I really liked, but someone else beat me to the punch. Some people I have talked to have said to stay away from the 9mm others say due to the cost to stay away from the super 38. I have been shooting IPSC just for a short time and the other concern I have is the small size of my hand. I want something that will be comfortable and easy to handle. Please give me your opinions. What should I be looking for and what to stay away from. I have looked online at the Trubor and Steelmaster but not sure. Any help or assistance would be greatly appreciated.

We have young teenagers in Alberta that shoot full power 38 supers. Stick with the 38 super and you won't have the problems associated with the 9mm

Please dont take these as a discouragement for you in buying an open gun, but I think you need to consider them in making your decision before going to the IPSC open division:

  • One critical consideration you need to consider when shooting open gun is your knowledge to reloading. Do you reload or will you have someone customize your open gun reload for you? I hope your answer is "Yes". :)
  • Open guns has its own individual personality and often times can be really picky in the rounds you feed them.
  • You can not rely on factory rounds. If you are ever lucky to find them in the market, will they work 100% for your gun?
  • When you shoot open, you will need to customize your loads specific to your gun.
  • If you do not have advance knowledge in reloading and not able to make your load work properly/reliably in your gun, shooting an open gun in a match can be very frustrating.

Rob what is the difference between the Tangolio's and Sti's why do you prefer the Tanfoglio's. Is it better to by new or used. I did try yours before I took the Black badge.

We have just recently started reloading. We are still learning the process therefore, I will be reloading as this will help bring the cost down a bit. Is it true for all open guns that you need to customize the loads or just for the super 38.

I like the ergonomics and trigger better; for me it's a better fit. The guns also cycle very fast due to low reciprocating mass (slide) without the violence penalty you get from fast cycling polymer framed guns. The steel frame eats up a lot of the recoil impulse.
I bought mine used. I don't think I've ever bought a brand new gun. Used guns can offer very good value if you know what to look for, but if I had the money new would be very nice.

where the best place to find a good used open gun? I am open to used or new. Would like to try the Tangolio's. What is the Gold Customer Eric like?

Too much muzzle flip, and a capacity penalty if you shoot in the U.S.
Lighter bullets moving faster = larger gas column to operate the compensating devices more efficiently. Heavier bullets need faster powders which generate less gas, and heavier bullets also have more inertia to overcome.
 
The STI Steelmaster is 9mm minor only. It's not designed or warranted for 9mm Major. With STI - your choices for open guns are the trubor and grandmaster; available in 9mm major or 38 super / super comp.

Anything bigger than a 9mm bullet (38 super is same as would be 9X40, etc) is less efficient in an open gun than the 9mm bullet. The concept of the open gun is to get as much gas and pressure as possible down the pipe and make the compensator / ports work. 40 S&W and 45 ACP do not produce the same amount of umph to make the comp work.

You won't go wrong with a Tanfoglio Eric or a Trubore or a Grandmaster...

Yes, you MUST reload to run an open gun. No one makes ammo hot enough to reliably run them.

hi guys. i tell you im a canadian livin in italy, here tanfoglio is good but gets broke often. a the king of open guns are sti and svi. they cos a bit more but they dont break. its a mode. like here for the harley davidsons and in cnd for moto guzzi or ducati. you know what i mean?
