Open sights for IPSC open division

It depends on the distance of the targets

IMHO...

Over 20 meters...optics win
10-15ish meters it's a wash
under 10 meters...irons sites are faster (optics just get in the way)

...and where the hell have you been hiding??

have you checked the CCG c-more mount at CRAFM? I got it and currently havign my frame drilled for it. At first glance, it seems to have eleminated the short range problems, the c-more window is almost dragging on the slide

I think they compound the problem that I have. You would certainly want to be tracking from left to right with the base of that C-More blocking your left side view.

I have a slide mounted Docter (mounted by Beven Graham) It's about as small and low as you will get for an optic...and at close range I still find it's obscuring my vision more than iron sites would.

I think these sidways mounts are popular with the 9 major guns...because they solve the ejection issues (brass hiting the normal mount and jamming the gun)

But...I saw a few vids of Cheely shooting one of these (I assume this is his gun) and it certainly didn't slow him down any.

I also currently have a slide mounted optic, the fastfire from burris (mounted by.. Myself :)). As you can probably guess, I didn't like it too much, that's why the frame is getting drilled for a c-more. I didn't like to have the sight picture so close to my face and the simple tought of having to unscrew the sight of its base to change the battery made me ill. When I handled someone's racegun with the c-more that had a sight window much farther, I just couldnt go back...

I'd love to see how well some of our top shooters could do with a decent set of iron sights but the same comps, etc.

I think you'd find they'd be about the same as with a top flight .40 Standard gun. The sight makes more of a difference than the recoil. By the same token you could try a Standard gun with an optic...

An open gun with Iron sights would be no better than a good standard gun in the hands of a real good shooter. Mike B can shoot as fast as as anyone with an open gun on close targets, when the targets get further away the precision of the 4 or 6 MOA dot far exceeds what can be seen quickly with Iron sights.

Jerry Barnhart tried iron sighted open at he US nats once a few years back, he told me that targets were being placed so close in a lot of matches it might be an advantage, turned out the targets were quite far that year and Jerry suffered the consequence.

The real plus of a C-more is how fast you can hit 15 - 25 Meter targets accurately.

Mounting it sideways to get the dot lower is just a poor trick so you won't have to practice mounting the gun and finding the dot instantly, it might help ejection on 9 mm cases but better tuning will fix that as well.

The other big plus of the C-More, and hence the name, is you can see more and transition target to target faster, which is almost always sideways or up.

And I thought this was so you could shoot "gangsta style" and have the sight the right way up!!

...Sorry, couldn't resist

no thats not my gun on the picture, my compensated barrel is under gunsmithing actually
maybe I could try it with 45acp meanwhile :ninja:

Or Production guys withe their...ahem...enhancements

Chuckling on that one, I know what you mean Q, my productions are straight out of the box, natta done to them,,, its amazing how smooth the trigger on a G17 gets after 200000 rds :dancingbanana: but I suppose that is considered a very expensive time consuming modification? :p

And they are fun to shoot in the other divisions. I may experiement with a new G35 I have for the open division, time to start tinkering.

Cheers
