Valmets are definitely the nicest of the AK variants IMHO. I have a Hunter and an M78, and the quality and reliability are great on both. Maintenance is, per any AK, very easy.
Are both models pricey and hard to find? How much does ammo generally run for it?
The M78 is more expensive (almost double) than the regular hunter. There's a hunter in .308 on irunguns right now for 1900$USD. One store in Canada is selling an M78 in 5.56 for 11.5k$ (don't do it... it's not a 11.5k rifle)
Ammo is either .308 or .223... not more expensive than 'others'.
IF you see one in 7.62x39 for less than 5 grand, take it now!
Also, note that it's legal in Canada as a non-restricted.
Lastly, if you really want an M78, don't buy a hunter and convert it. Save your $$ and hassles for finding parts and wait for an m78 to show up.
What's the difference between the M78 and the Regular? The M78 is an upgraded version I guess.
Valmets are the best implementation of the AK action out there. The largest benefit is that it's prescribed Non-Restricted by OIC so it's least likely to be reclassified.
.223 version can be easily converted to 7.62x39 and will take regular (cheap) AK mags
Worth the price? It's not like there are other options for a true AK action in Canada. Maintenance is almost as easy as on an AK - you do have to undo some screws to take the top cover off, but it's easy from there. You can also replace the top cover with a Galil or military type Valmet so that you don't have to deal with the screws.
It shoots as well as any semi-auto can be expected to. Definitely better than Russian style AKs - the gas tube is a looser fit at the gas block so it does not affect your barrel as it heats up.
Hey,
Do you have an updated link, or what's required to change a 5.56 to 7.62x39? (Guessing the bolt and barrel at the very least?)
Cheers
^ oh wow... I'd give my left nut for a..
.308 to 7.62x39?? I didn't know that was possible within reason. New bolt+barrel+magwell??
Yes, exactly. Bit of an extensive conversion.
