Opinions about the Colt SAA.45. The real one.

I picked up a 1890 made 44-40 frontier six shooter and its mechanically still very nice and buttery, even better than my Blackhawk!
Shoots very nice with pyrodex or unique loads.
Nothing seems to compare to the real thing. You can feel the difference.
 
i don't know if you guys know this but for awhile colt stopped making the saa. when they brought it back they no longer made the parts. uberti if i remember well was making the rough pieces and colt was doing the finishing and assembly. now i don't know if that still holds true today.

The Frontier Six-Shooter was Colts answer to ammunition compatibility with the Winchester 73 rifle in .44WCF (.44-40 Winchester). It was introduced in 1877, 4 years after the introduction of the Single Action Army Peacemaker in .45 Long Colt.

It's actually a .357 Mag.... for info it's a 2nd gen, mfg 1961, on the 125th anniversary of Colt wheel guns [1836] ..... grips aren't original to it [I'm the second owner, the first owner lost the original black polymer 'Eagle' grips & as he'd replaced them with bone grips to look more like a 1960's TV western SAA - Sadly, he also lost the original box & papers as well]. I've owned it for ~ 25 yrs.... The rig is a custom made by Walt Ostin....

Anyway, love 'er just the same.

Prescribed antique Handguns:

•manufactured before 1898 that can discharge only rim-fire cartridges, other than .22 Calibre Short, .22 Calibre Long or .22 Calibre Long Rifle cartridges;
•manufactured before 1898 that can discharge centre-fire cartridges, other than a handgun designed or adapted to discharge .32 Short Colt, .32 Long Colt, .32 Smith and Wesson, .32 Smith and Wesson Long, .32‑20 Winchester, .38 Smith and Wesson; .38 Short Colt, .38 Long Colt, .38-40 Winchester, .44‑40 Winchester, or .45 Colt cartridges.
 
You want a single side Buscadero rig in that case. That will give you the drop for the holster. Or if you plan on finding a second Colt and shoot the two at once then you may want a double sided rig. Or buy right and left hand single rigs and wear them crossed over each other. That way you can run one or two rigs as needed for the day.

The rig shown is very nice. I might opt for a slightly less flashy buckle though. that's a little more BLING! than I think I could tolerate for myself.

Pulling two hoglegs at once and shooting them in "gunfighter" style is hellishly fun. It's confusing until you get the hang of sighting and holding them but still fun.

If you do try this be VERY careful not to give in to the natural tendency to pull the one hand back while shooting the other gun. Keep them both out at full extension so you're not sweeping one hand with the other gun which may be cocked and ready to fire.

I've never felt the need for a Colt made Colt. But I can understand that "something extra" for those that do feel that need. And I have to admit that I lean towards a 1911 with a dancing pony on the side now and then. So one day perhaps. There's a little something about being able to tell folks "Colt" without having to include the word "clone".
 
I'll have to check with mernickle, see if I can get this rig in buscadero. The more I look at it the more I like the shiny parts.
As for shooting two, it took a bit of work to get one and I can't see me adding a clone with a Colt :).
Besides, my next Colt will be an antique.
I'm assuming the barrel and chamber will be the same as my Uberti and can take the same reloads?
I was feeding the Uberti a steady diet of 250g campro .45 LC bullits and 5.5 g of Trail Boss.
I still have a 1000 campro left so hope I can use them.
 
I've been active in CAS since the early days. We all shot .44s or .45s. You were regarded as light in your Lamas if you shot a .38, rifle or pistol. I came into the game with a Ruger Vaquero in .44 Magnum and added another when the game switched to two guns. Along the way I've added Uberti SAA clones in .45 and .38 '71 Open Tops. ALL of those have had parts replaced and constant tuning to keep them functioning. The Rugers soldier on.

Back in the day, it was a matter of pride to shoot originals before the prices went out of sight. There are still a few around in the game, but not many. CAS guns get used a lot to the point of abuse you would not want to inflict on an original - dropping on rough surfaces, speed cocking, holster wear and just constant pounding. Even with powder puff loads it takes a toll.

Paying through the nose for a REAL Colt, "antique" or otherwise, ties up a lot of cash in a seldom if ever shot "safe queen". Fine, if that is what you want.

When Mike Venturino wrote his book on shooting the single actions, he had to hunt for a Colt in .38 Spl. Most of them had been converted to .45 or .44 by barrel replacements and reaming out the cylinders. Now the .38 rules in the game which has evolved into IPSC in Cowboy boots. At least IPSC has an enforced power factor.
 
All my handguns are used for range shooting, paper punching as that's all that's available to me. I hardly ever use a holster also.
So there's very little abuse .
I can see the need for rugers ,etc if your doing CAS.
I'm not downing the Clones ,as my El Patron was a very nice .45 and I doubt most people could tell the difference between the two .
It's just that, for me, it's got to be the real thing .
I can't explain why but no substitute will scratch that itch:)
 
I have a Taylor CO. & Uberti .45, I love that pistol. I'm using 30 gr of BP and a 250gr Bullet. It has a nice sound to it when it fires, as well a lovely flash. I have a Mernickle QD 5 rig, what a nice system. This is my first 6 shooter, wow. It would be nice to have a Colt .45, but the price and wait time is holding me back. maybe one of the days, I'll just say to hell with it and get a Colt. But until then, i'm sure enjoying my clone....:d
 
I get the Colt thing 100% but my Ubertis scratch my itch and leave me with plenty of budget for other itches!

Very nice. Is Walt Ostin still making leather? I searched but didn't come up with any recent info for him. He made some leather for me like 20 years ago!
