During my RPAL class we had the opportunity to fondle some revolvers.
I had never ever considered it prior to this, but I kinda liked the weight and feel of the Smith and Wesson. I'd love to hear any opinions about a starter revolver?

If you are considering a revolver, ask yourself what you want to do with one. If you have any doubts, my thoughts would suggest you consider a 4.2" gun like the S&W 686 or the Ruger GP-100 in 38/.357mag or a dedicated 38spl S&W. The shorter barreled guns will appeal to the defensive minded gun owners. Watch for any of them on the EE here. There are some good buys. 38spl is a great round. I picked up a Model 10 5" and it is more fun to shoot then it should be. The caliber is very popular and guns designed for it are generally very accurate shooters.

Good luck on your quest.

Why not a s&w 617 for some inexpensive practice.
Thanks!
I really like the idea of a .22lr
Having trouble finding one for less then $1100 atm ;) Was hoping to hear maybe that maybe the alfa proj 2251 hasn't been horrible for some. It looks less expensive.

Thank you! I'll be snooping around the EE for anything that looks promising.

I own a 629. 44 special rounds are pleasant and you can really get some attention with the 44 magnum rounds when you want to. Really knocks the dust out of the celing.

Well, I have a 2251 while my brother has a 617. The Alpha is accurate and is finished not too bad. The trigger is heavier than the 617. It holds 9 and the 617 holds 10. The Alpha is lighter than the 617. I think it's worth the money. You may still want a 617 if you decide revolvers suit you but it's a great way to get started...

I've seen decent S&W model 14's on the EE for 650-700. That would be my first choice. The only drawback is .38 special ammo can be pricey if you don't reload. For a .22 you can't go far wrong with a K-22 (Model 17) Should be able to score a decent shooter on the EE for around $800.

I've owned an Alfa and while there is nothing wrong with them a vintage S&W is in a different league.

While I have a superb H&R 9 shot .22LR caliber revolver, the model 999 Sportsman, most semi-auto .22 pistols outclass .22 revolvers. And are cheaper.

If you like the fit, feel, weight, and aesthetics of a quality revolver, you cannot go wrong with Ruger's GP100, S&W's 586 & 686 models, and lets not forget that Colt made some of the greatest revolvers on the planet.

We need more revolver shooters & owners, & every gun club needs more women shooters. Buy a quality revolver, bring your wife, girlfriend, sister, sister's friend, daughter, family members, and introduce new female shooters to our heritage sport.

If we don't, our socialist/fascist sharia compliant Liberal gov't will disarm lawful gun owners and we become subjects instead of citizens.

I agree. When you set aside the snake guns (prices gone a little crazy due to collectability), vintage Colt revolvers like the 3-5-7, the Official Police, the Officer's Model Target, Officer's Model Match and the Trooper (MK III and MK V) are great choices for very good revolvers.

I have both S&W and Alfa Proj revolvers. I do believe the S&W are a little nicer gun than the Alfa Proj but by no means are the Alfa Proj of poor quality. Buy either and you will be happy.

Well, I guess I'll go against the grain. My first (last year) was a used (but well cared for) 1976 Ruger Blackhawk 4 5/8" in .357 magnum. Now, it may be because it's my newest acquisition, but it is currently my favourite firearm. .38 special is a pleasure to shoot, given the weight of the revolver, and the heavier .357 magnum rounds give a nice snap, and a thump in the chest, lol. I find that I can shoot it quite accurately, as each action with a single action revolver is very deliberate. I'm seriously considering a SAA clone in .22lr for the wife.

I have two Alfa Projs (9mm and .357) and plan on getting more. I like them because they fit the niche I’m looking for. Cheaper than most others but of decent enough quality. Visually appealing as well. I don’t plan on winning any competitions with them but they do the job I bought them for, having fun on the range with a platform I’m not very familiar with.

You can't go wrong with a Smith & Wesson, they are great revolvers.

I started out with a 686, the ammo got expensive really quickly. My next purchase will be a revolver in 22lr, probably a 617.

Calvin is right on the money , both are beautiful guns. I had a 617 and regret getting rid of it, they are a quality piece. And the 686 will be in my future one day, after trying one out at the range, I'm sold on it.

If you want to look at something less expensive, I Run Guns is selling Heritage revolvers.
I picked up a single action western style .22 for less than $250 all in.
