Opinions for a starter revolver?

There's also the S&W Model 19 with 4.25 inch barrel, if you prefer the half lug/ejector shroud over the full underlug.

An older S&W Model 14, 6" barrel, with adjustable sights and (often) a wider target trigger and hammer, blued, can usually be had on CGN. Last I looked there were two good lookers on offer from Weimajack for very fair prices. These have a wonderful trigger, very light in single action, very accurate. The 6" barrel has ideal balance & sight radius. I'm sure the less common 8 1/2" is nice too. I wouldn't go shorter, want the sight radius. Blued finish is fine in a target pistol, and the blueing on these older Smiths is lovely. I purchased one a while back (a K38, manufactured 1952) and couldn't be happier. I reload for it with a Lee hand tool, mostly duplicating the classic wadcutter target load used in NRA Bullseye. 38 Spl is easy to shoot, easy and cheap to reload. Tempting to get a Model 17 (aka K22) as well.

Go S&W and never regret it. First you buy a 586/696 or 19/66 and then you realize that you want a 22 so you buy a 17/617.

I saw those two Model 14-2's from Weimajack. Struck me as being exceptionally well priced. I think he is a business and has to collect tax but even so.....

I must admit I'm surprised they haven't been snapped up at that price but I guess the market for vintage revolvers is relatively small.

Whatever you do, don't buy junk. I found out the hard way many times, get what you really want first. Same with everything else, like a house for example. My first house was priced about 10 grand less then the rest of the block because it was on a steep lot. I bought it figuring I would get used to the hill over time. I didn't, and actually hated that place more as time went on. I sold that and bought the house I should have in the first place.

I agree with ryan. People are going to dog pile me but I hate Turkish and Chinese firearms. They will never be good enough in my opinion.

I hate Dodge Caravans. Suburban/Tahoe is the only way to go. $30K vs $70K. Same type of discussion. Spend your money in a way that works for you, but remember, someone who does differently isn’t wrong.

I get the Chinese but the Turks! Hell they have been making firearms since Christ was a Corporal. The Turks make all the CZ Shotguns and they are pieces of art IMHO. Their Girsan made copy of the 92F is a well made piastol made on Beretta supplied CNC equipment. The guns are used by the Turkish Army which has seems to have a rather good reputation.

Take Care

I think I would have preferred the six chamber version better as well. Just for the sake of it being a more traditional six shooter.

You have a point, but many times we are limited by our budgets. I,d love to be driving a new Ferrari for my summer car and perhaps a AMG Mercedes suv for a winter beater, but have come to realize thats not reality in my life. We all have limitations.

My advice is to go to your local club and try different guns that members have! If approached in a polite manner, no gun lover worth his salt wouldn't offer to let a new member of the firearms community burn some of their powder. Show them the ropes. You may even find someone that has a gun for sale that suits ur needs. Totally agree with longer barrel for sight radius as well as 22 caliber. Buy quality and youll never regret you bought a Smith&Wesson. Only my opinion and the others have given sound advice. Glad you've joined the shootring community

I'm surprised to read this. I have a K22 and often wish I had 10 rounds when I shoot it! Why would you prefer the 6 round chamber? Is it just tradition? Similarities to the K38?

I just feel weird shooting a revolver that isn't a "six shooter"! So yea I guess it's tradition more so than anything else.
