Opinions on a muzzle brake

My experience is limited to owning a Browning with BOSS. I don’t own it anymore.

I hate to sit next to someone at the range that shoots with a brake. These people are as inconsiderate as those shooting semi-auto rifles spraying casings all over others.

Thankfully, you do have the option of moving to another bench or leaving the facility.

saturday morning was my second time I fired my braked .300wm without plugs. Not fun at all. Previously I had fired one once from prone on a gravel road, it was excruciating, I was sticking my finger in my ear and looking for blood. I though my gun blew up. Well on saturday I again was prone but on 3 feet of snow. I wanted to see how much sound would be absorbed by the snow......not efing much i tell ya. It sounded like a rattly speaker in my ear for 4,5,6 hours after one single shot, not to mention the ringing.

That instant I realized I can not and will not ever shoot without hearing protection ever again, but when stalking you dont always have time to put on muffs or plugs. That leaves the only option being electronic muffs but I just dont feel comfortable with that either. Im stuck between a split forehead and a busted eardrum.

Does anyone know anything about the old brake savage offered that you turned on and off? Was it atleast decent?

I don't know. It came factory on my savage fcp-k, I think it's the same as the one on the bas-k or what ever it's called. It sure works great but wow is it deafening. Shure blows alot of snow or dirt back too.

Shooting a bigger bore with moderate levels of powder and a longer barrel slows down the gas discharge and makes shooting without protection a lot more enjoyable. There is no pop like you get with a mag.

I usually let these people shoot first. But is this inconsiderate or no one cares???
Yes, it's "inconsiderate" in the same way that you firing factory-power rounds out of your rifle is "inconsiderate", after all, you could use reduced power reloads or sub-caliber rounds that would make sitting next to you more pleasant, you'd still get all the benefit of practice without all that nasty noise.

A lot of the factory brakes direct a lot of blast directly back at the shooter.
I would talk to Dennis (Guntech) and see what he can do for you.
I think you would be happy with a Vais.

You would be pleasantly surprised at the difference.

I still recommend shooting with ear protection...Under the right circumstances an un-braked rifle can still cause permanent damage.

Yes, circumstances like ...going off.
I believe that (with an extremely small set of possible exceptions) every common centerfire rifle round will produce a level of sound pressure that will damage human hearing at the shooter's position.
