Opinions on Browning Abolt IIs

Got one a few years ago, mid hunting season, (read panic) previous rifle broke. Ordered one from Russells, had to seat my loads about 0.040" deeper than the old rifle liked. First trip to the range shoot's clover leafs. I bought the synthetic stalker in 30.06. I may be in the minority but I think the clip is cool, fast and easy, keeps the guts clean when when not in use. They are a bit pricy but of all the rifles I have this one's a keeper.

I've had three... a Hunter model in .30-06, a Stainless Stalker in .308 Win and still currently have a 26" barrel Composite Stalker in .300 Win Mag. My experience with all three is that they are very accurate rifles. Only sold the .30-06 and .308 to fund other deals. The .300 Win Mag will do 3 shot cloverleaf groups with my own reloads if I do my part... 8)
I don't like them.
They probably have the worst factory trigger on the market and your choice of aftermarket replacements is very limited.
Put enough miles on them and the floorplate will start to twist and bend and the "clip" will start to rattle.
Every one I have used, about a dozen all told including A-Bolts and A-Bolt II, all had a tendency to jamb when cycled fast.

Likes... 60 degree bolt throw, accurate, okay trigger, reliable...
Dislikes... Seems to be prone to rust more than other makes, in-side of stock is half assed work to say the least, could have been carved out by a monkey, my savage was made with more care... and it's like 1/2 the price of a Browning...

I have one, the Varmint Stalker in .22-250 and it is an excellent shooter. I feel more comfortable with long-shots with my Browning than I did with the Remington rifles I've owned in the past.

Other than the clip/mag thingy (which sucks), they handle well and are accurate. They are better in smaller calibers as the stocks are not well suited for recoiling rifles. My wood stocked 22/250 has a bigger stock than a synthetic 375H&H I used to own. Both were A-Bolts :shock:

Or too slow also. You try to quietly creep one in, you get a hang up sometimes. If you are quietly trying to chamber one, usuall it's because you are about to shoot something.
Last month my buddy was at Powder Keg Sports and a guy was handing over almost $2000 for a A-Bolt Ti. That's a lot of cash for a small piece of titanium and a fancy looking stock when it's still on a mickey mouse designed rifle. For $500 less, I'd much rather the titanium M700 and I'm not a Remmy fan.

I think you would find that as hunting rifles they are fantastic but as shooters they would be average, despite the accuracy, seems the removable mag and troubles would be too much. I have never had any trouble with mine and am Browning for life Comp stalker A-boltII in a .300wm and love it.

I see it the complete opposite. The two I owned were fantastic shooters but failed as a reliable hunting rifle.
Hunting
1. Jammed in front of a massive muley
2. Hit the barrel only on a rock, stock cracked right down the grip.
3. Rattling drove me nuts when I was trying to be quiet.
4. Magazines got looser and looser as time went.
5. Couldn't just throw a shell in with out having it part way in mag(for 30 06 action) and have it chamber.
6. Action screws loosened.
Shooting
1. Very accurate
2. Easy to load for
3. Recoil was decent
4. Looked nice on the bench at the range.
Still, if I'm going to buy a rifle with mainly shooting in mind, I must have a good trigger.

I like the mag spring. The rest of it is a little less than good.
went into Wholesale Sports today here in Edmonton....one of the only two guys I'll deal with at the gun counter spotted me and just had to hand me something to fondle until my number came up...................an A-Bolt titanium in 300WSM with a camo stock...........jeez.......how the hell can they justify $1800+ for that thing? :shock: The fondling lasted about 15 seconds......I had to put it on the counter :lol: ...when my number came up I asked him to take it away and show me a stainless Model Seven in 308.... 8)
