I am looking into a gun for coyote hunting. Am leaning towards a .243 with a smaller grain bullet to also have capability for deer hunting, but looking for opinions from those who have experience coyote hunting. I am also wanting to make sure to keep hide and fur damage to a minimum. Thanks
300 grain, 4570, soft point, 80 yards, vitals, toppled last week's 12 point moose.Meat waste has a lot more to do with bullet construction, and where you shoot than how much energy the cartridge has. Shoot a deer behind the front legs with a heavily constructed bullet designed for big bear and you might wish you had more disruption.
I can shoot two identical deer, hitting one with 4000 ft/lbs and another with 2000, and waste twice as much with the lower powered cartridge.
If you really want to minimize blood shot meat, shoot a heavy bullet at 1500 fps.
What in the world are you talking about? Seriously.Meat waste.
243 is marginal when used incorrectly.
243 is a marginal caliber past a certain distance. What in the world are you talking about? Seriously.
At a mile, my 6BR is still over 900fps. Would you stand in front of a 105gr Berger going 900fps? If it will kill you, it will kill a coyote, AND a deer.It is dependent on the size if the animal.
Coyote at 200 yards yes, 1000 yards, well what do you think ?
Take some time and read the free papers on the Hornady site, it's cute interesting
what distance is that?243 is a marginal caliber past a certain distance,
Use your head or look up some ballistics.what distance is that?
Quit ignoring facts.Dude, I’ve shot more game with a 243 than you will in six lifetimes. Quit giving advice on things you have no clue about.
Jon, what are they saying that is contradicting what I am and supporting what you are?Quit ignoring facts.
I think the team of engineers at Hornady know more than you.
That the 243 has diminishing lethality as distance increases.Jon, what are they saying that is contradicting what I am and supporting what you are?
Where did I say that? What distance? How is that different from any other cartridge? Better yet, what experience do you have with the 243?That the 243 has diminishing lethality as distance increases.
You seem to think it has no limits on distance.
Enough to know go /no go based on my barrel length bullet type, weight, distance and approximate game size.Where did I say that? What distance? How is that different from any other cartridge? Better yet, what experience do you have with the 243?
