Opinions on Ruger Deerfield (Range Report, May 5, 2007)

Also had the older version ... and was completely happy with it ?

Great little "dogging" gun ... !

The earliest models were hard to unload by clearing the mag tube. A little latter they brought out a push-button type shell release ... much better.
A very fast gun for your type of bush with a Wiiliams receiver "peep" sight.
Use the insert to sight-in, then take it out for a march larger aperature to hunt with. The front sight should also be replaced with a bigger bead ... I chose a 3/16" for mine ... worked great & took quite a few deer !

My wife bought me a deerfield when they first came out, I have killed 6 bears, 5 deer and some wild bore with it. I love it soo much I have talked a number of friends into buying one. As for reliably loading etc , it has been super. I reload a heavy handload with 265gr bullets and it handles them as well as all factory ammo. I have probably shot about 1000 rounds through mine with one non pick up. I have all the confidence in the world that this would be a great gun for you. I hope this helps

If I understand correctly, is not the 44mag one of the rounds that does not benefit that much from handloading as pretty much all the guns it is chambered in are modern?

For me the real benefit to handloading the 44 mag is the fact that in Vancouver I have found no variety in bullet weights, its 240 grain or nothing. I prefer 265 and up to 300 for the 44 magnum in a carbine. On a different note I much prefer the older carbine to the deerfield, but the 2 things the deerfield has in its favor are, a rate of twist that is 1:20 and it comes with a factory peep sight.

I had one, never shot anything with it. A great toy for the range or the bush. I know a guy in NB who hunts exclusively with one, his step sone swears, " you could shoot a deer in the ankle and kill him with this gun"

Well after a few months of searching, one finally came up for sale at a local gun store. Can't wait to get out to the range and try it out, and deer season can not come soon enough. Here she is:

I am very happy.:D :D :D

Nice find, its funny I've seen dozens of the older ones for sale, but never a deerfield.

Sorry to mis-lead, but it is a Ruger Carbine, not the Deerfield. Have never seen a Deerfield in the flesh, and the shops around my area seem to be unable to import them. This one seems to be a fairly early model with a serial # in the 4000's so by my reconing, it was made in '63. Will get a range report in, just as soon as Turkey Season is over, or I have filled my tags, whichever comes first, hopefully the tags get filled promptly.:D

I here you with the receiver sight. I plan on getting something other than the scope. It came with the firearm and I took the pic with it still on. It is already removed, I am just waiting to get some calls in to various gunshops to see what they have. Anyone know off the top of their head what peep sights or ghost ring fit the Ruger Carbine?

the scope that came with it is a Bushnell Custom 2.5x. It has an interesting reticle that I have never seen before, not that I am an expert on scopes or anything, but it is different than anything that I have ever looked through. I am assuming that the "Custom" means that it was special ordered from bushnell quite a few years ago, but like I said I am no scope guru. Optically it is very clear and bright, well taken care of, as was the rest of the rifle, hardly looks like it was used at all. Here's a pic:

Not sure if I want to sell it just yet, as you can never have enough scopes right? But I will keep you in mind if I ever decide to part with it.

SuperCub:

Thanks for the heads up with the receiver sight, I will check them out. Any GUNNUTZ suppliers/dealers of these?

Thanks,

I believe either the Russians used that or the Germans did on the majority of there sniper rifles...

I mean that kind of reticule.
