Opinions on Ruger Deerfield (Range Report, May 5, 2007)

About 20 yrs ago I had a scope similar to that, old metal tube, Weaver, put it on an AR15 to play with Chucks.... not the best choice but a heck of alot of fun!!

And yes I have a Deerfield, and absolutley love it !!! I'm acctually thinking of camoing it in a woodland or realtree type patern. Haven't committed tio that one yet.

44 Mag is great on deer, best one I had, with Marlin lever, preDeerfield days, was a yearling buck on the dead run down the trail I happened to be walking up, (chased by numerous 30 cal. ) put a 240 gr JHP in the right shoulder and pushed it over like it was hit by a frieght train, from about 50-60 yrds.

Down fall, 4 rd mags are not really ergonomically freindly for quick reloads, especially with gloves. (10 rds would be fun!!) (who said that "I" didn't say anything)

I acctually have found that an old M1 Carbine 15 rds mag pouch (dual) will hold two mags nicely , I run my sling through the belt loops and have two mag accessable at all times without fumbling in pockets. Makes it a favorite for up north, grabbing it and jumping from the vehicle to have a look at things, with 8 rds and no fumbling.

Range Report

Well managed to get to the range today. Did not to bad, set up at 50 yds and had at her. The target is 5 of mine plus buddy wanted a couple of shots, and his is the low hole, plus he had a couple more off the target and right. Obviously it shoots to the right. Also spent some time shooting at some 2 litre pop bottles filled with water. What a great way to put a smile on your face:D . These were shot with the factory open sights, man I hate buckhorn sights! Got a Williams peep sight on order, as well as the "FireSight" front post. Should be good to go when deer season gets around. Here's the target.

Very very happy:D :D :D Gotta love the big holes! Don't know why I bothered with the Shoot-n-See, you could see those from a hundred!

Reading this thread has me thinking of getting a ruger 44 mag. I have always liked the idea of one but you could not use thm for big game hunting in Alberta until fairly recently. I don't see very many of them for sale in the last several years but I will be seriously looking for a buy on one soon.

Not worried about any hijacking here. As a matter of fact we should start a new thread, "Show off you Ruger .44". Cool stock on that one. Me Likes:D . I am assuming you are now the proud owner? Does that model have the button to unload the magazine?

I bought the gun today off an old German gentleman, very kind old guy. It has a button on the side where you load the mag, I didn't know what it was for though. I am not sure I like the full stock, I'll have to see if it grows on me, if not I'll trade it off for a standard stocked model.
