Opinions on S and W SD9 VE

I'm an old guy who prefers revolvers, but have had a few 9mm. pistols over the past 40 or so years including Ruger, Glock and others.
I currently have a CZ P-10F and I think it's a great, solidly built pistol for the money.
I have fairly big hands and find the little extra grip length is fine, and it lets me park my little finger firmly on the grip frame, rather than curling it out of the way below the magazine. I find it to be an accurate pistol with the factory 3 dot sights, it has good ergonomics with a very short rigger reset and can be set up to accommodate both right and left handed shooters as it has a reversible magazine release and an ambidextrous slide release. It also comes with a choice of 3 backstrap profiles.
It is a bit big for concealed carry, but we are in Canada so can't be trusted for that by our overlords.
They show up used for a decent price fairly often and I'd say that if you find one and the fit, feel and price suit you then go for it.

I've found the CZ P10 SC for $675, $762 with tax or so, same as the F version. Looks like the same slide, but smaller grip/mag capacity.

Where do you see them used? I'm in Ontario.

Well geez, if you guys wouldn't take one for free or whatever crazy low amount just send it my way.

Same, lol. I'll take what I can get if it's free/low price.

...OP, have you priced out ammo? Would you be buying ammo in little 50-round boxes, or a case of 1000 at a time? Check out the cost.

People crap on .22s but you can develop better fundamentals at a much lower operating cost by buying a .22LR handgun. Give it a little thought.

Couldn't agree more - If you shoot even a modest amount of any centerfire your ammunition cost will very quickly eclipse what you spent on the pistol.

If you want to learn to shoot pistol, 22LR is absolutely the way to go. The pistols are not necessarily cheaper than centerfire, but the ammunition sure is.

I have about 30 different 9mm pistols. Best bang for the buck is the Canik.

Excellent trigger. better than average accuracy. Reliable.

You can get a good one for less than $500

Sadly I don't have access to EE yet. I tried applying last week.

Understandably a 22LR would be the perfect gun to learn pistols with, but I know 9mm is the universal go-to for handguns, so I'd rather spend the bang for something I know will be most common and still relatively easy to learn from.
Now if it were a .357 Magnum Revolver.. Theeeen I might be more keen to shoot a 22LR lol.

I have been seriously looking to get the CZ P-10 SC from G4Cgunstore, it's a store that's pretty much an hour away from me. I know they're reliable. The total will be $762, I know it's really pricey(for me, I know some pistols go for 1000+) but I know I'm going to be getting a quality gun that'll last me a life time(hopefully).

But, with Ganderlite stating Canik being recommended, I'm also looking at the TP9SF from Marstar as well.

To complicate matters worse, you could get that .357, and shoot the mild .38 Special in it.

oh lord my brain

some days I wish I was rich, I wouldn't debate it at all, BUY IT ALL! hahah

I am really looking at Marstar now though for the TP9SF. Looks like a decent in between, not complete jank, but hasn't gotten all the bells and whistles like a CZ P10 SC would presumably.

If you're that open minded, and a little bit patient, wait until you get EE access. You can find a great deal on a used pistol and save a bunch of dough for ammunition and range fees. I've recently seen stuff like gen 1 S&W M&P9 with extra mags and holster in the $450 range. There's a lot to be said for buying a used pistol from a reputable member here, that way you can be sure you're not getting a lemon - This can happen with any brand, but particularly with the lower tier manufacturers.

I own an SD9, the gun looks ok, feels ok in the hand but the trigger is terrible. There have been some good alternatives listed here but... OP if you are looking for a "budget" 9mm, you can't go wrong with the Walther PPX or Creed. Both very inexpensive, great triggers, reliable and accurate. My PPX is my go to with new shooters and they all love it.

If you are still looking take a gander at the Girsan line as well. They are Beretta FS copies made on Beretta supplied equipment in Turkey. I bought one for $450 on the EE a few years ago. Fit and finish is excellent. The Beretta design is virtually jam proof. The Girsan Compact I have is every bit the shooter as the $750 Beretta M1A1 Compact I own in stainless. The Girsan and Canick are really excellent pistols. Their price does not reflect how good they are. The Turks have been making firearms since Christ was a Corporal. If funds are tight that is where I would be putting my money.

Take Care

After debating and looking around, watching videos, some recommendations here and in private messages I decided to go with a Canik TP9SF for $600.

Transfer has started today, got my reference number and now it's just a waiting game I suppose.

Thank you to all for the comments, it gave me a lot to ponder for a few days and a lot to research on. I'm glad I did, because I think the Canik will be an excellent decision over the SD9 VE.

I've shot the s&w sd9 very.
It's cheap for a reason! Because it's junk. It grouped around 6" wide at 20 yards.
The slide has tons of play....hell. the whole pistol has tons of play in it.
You're far far better off getting a surplus cz or beretta.
You can find parts for them almost anywhere as well.

+1
Owned one sold it fast. Really turned off by the accuracy and plastic guide rod, terrible trigger. Much better budget pistols out there.

Posts above, I went with a Canik TP9SF after it being recommended by people here, some friends who also have restricted handguns, and of course youtube videos.
