OPIONS only in 338 Lapua in HS VS Sako

I am wondering who out there has had the chance to handle and shoot the 338 lapua in a HS Presicion and a Sako TRG 42 - i am looking into getting a 338 L and would like to see what everyones opions are on the two. THIS IS IN NO WAY A THREAD TO START BASHING THE OTHER NAME I would like honest opions and not just your thoughts of a favorite manufacture in other brands or calibers- JUST 338 LAPUA, or I my look into a custom build, please feel free to opinionate your thoughts and likes/dislikes
 
I have a biased opinion based upon my preference for an improved version in black on black. I happen to like 1/4 MOA.

You will get many different and varied opinions. Kinda like asking a bunch of women thier favorite brand of hair dye. "The one I use is best".
 
I've fired a TRG on a few occasions. I liked the Sako for its smooth action and what I feel is a superior stock for prone and bench shooting. Accuracy was excellent for a factory rifle (~.5 MOA with 300 scenars).

It boils down to what your priorities are. If accuracy is your objective, there are better ways to hedge your chances of achieving that (going custom). Other than that, I think in terms of quality and accuracy, both HS and Sako are on equal footing.
 
I see the price tags on either of these rifles and I wonder why not just build what you want?

I know not everyone has the patience and the desire to research every part and find someone they trust to put it together, but it is the only way too get everything you really want. Plus in most cases you may even save some money.

If you like resale value a factory rifle is your best bet, I have never been able to sell any of my custom guns for even close to what I paid for them, yet I have sold many factory guns for much more than what I paid for them. A custom rifle is built to fit the shooter, so I would need to find a clone of me who wants the exact same rifle to get good resale (hasn't happened yet).

I bought a sako TRG 42 just a year or so ago, and the price for the same rifle new is already more than what I paid.
 
I'd go custom as well. For the money you'll spend extra to go the custom route I think you'll end up with more than a factory rifle could give you.
 
Both the HS and Sako are decent rifles and cost roughly the same$$.
The feel is totally different between the 2. When comparing production rifles such as these 2 I do not believe there is a right or wrong choice as both have pros and cons.
The Sako accessories can be hard to get and are EXPENSIVE for what you get. If you do not LOVE the fit and feel of the stock , too bad, there is nothing to replace it with.
The HS has alternatives for stocks and being a modified 700 clone there are many options available. Mags are not as robust and you have to go with non HS made parts like bipod, which to me is a bonus.
For what both cost you are within spitting distance in cost of a custom built to what YOU want.
However as someone else stated resale on a custom is not always as good.

Before purchasing either the HS or the TRG I would suggest spending some time handling both , then make an informed decision, you may find 1 fits you better than the other or go custom.

I would love to have the opportunity to handle them both but being located in a small northern BC community north of nowhere it is virtually impossible to see both. I have handled a TRG 42 but the HS i have only seen on the internet- thats my delima

Well then, head down the highway to a less northern community and try out a fully adjustable boomer.:) Bring a bear tag and come shoot a blackie with it. lol

Sweet deals to be had if you show up with a bag full of money at the door.

It is my belief that one should never purchase a wife or rifle with out first looking, touching, examining and putting loads into it.
 
I choose the TRG42.

I'd even have a hard time letting the TRG go, even for a Timberwolf.

My girlfriend fired my TRG in .338 Lapua, and siad that it kicked less then my No4 .303 Enfield, and was much more confortable. She had no problems putting 20 rounds through it.

I had a bit of a problem with it.....it costs $5-$7 a round! I guess she owe's me now....

You Lapua guys need to stop complaining about the price.:D Handloading will save you a bunch of money. Failing that, buy something that lobs even more expensive ammo downrange and then the Lapua will seem cheap to feed!
 
Interesting comparison I just realized...

Dutchie is selling his Sako 338 LM, less than 100 rounds fired and no optics (but an included hard case) for $5000

Toomanyguns is selling his custom ATRS 338 Lapua AI including... Nightforce 8.5 - 32 X 56 scope, Nesika action, Jewell trigger, MacMillan A5 stock, Nightforce rings, 20moa base, Rock Creek barrel, Redding competition die set BRAND NEW for $7500

Consider that the optics, rings (no indication that Dutchie is including these in his deal) and dies would easily get you to $2500, you're essentially a dead heat in terms of price, but getting a lot more in terms of product with the custom rifle. I should note that while I've never handled either rifle, I know what an A5 McMillan feels like. I'd personally be more inclined to go with the custom.
 
Yup, I agree with the good looking fella.:)

A package deal (with dies, brass, bullets, and powder) for the right price can be a real bargain.
All it takes is a bag of money, a face to face visit, and a bit of negotiating.
Most guys cant see that far or that clearly.

I will even take you out to shoot a bear with it - just for the effect. It is a sight to behold when a 300gr SMK smacks a bear.
