Optic For The Sandbox

What am I waiting for ? :popcorn:

All of you have been super smart about things lately, most constructive. I thank you all for that levelheadedness!! (wow, big word!)

Thanks for all your input... it's been helpful (ELCAN versus other choices IAW rules of the CF (good, bad or indifferent)....

Peace out,

Barney

I used the Elcan for most of the last tour, and an ACOG for the last month or so. I liked the ACOG better, but the Elcan wasn't that bad. If you are going with the BG 99% of the engagements are 300+meters, and you are probably not going to see who's shooting at you. I tried seeing them during contact with the Elcan, ACOG and LAV optics, and other than the odd rpg signature I didn't see sh*t. Anything up close, forget about shooting at them because all you are likely to hit is an AK held over a wall. If its close move as quickly as you can back to the last corner you walked around. My advice to anyone going outside the wire on a regular basis is take the money you want to spend on optics and buy a good set of boots,gps, small pack, and a sensible chest rig. You wil be money ahead. Everyone wants to go there and get in a gunfight. The problem is ,it's not a shooting war it's a try not to get blowed up war. Instead of researching optics, do your homework on IED's.

True Dat!

I can't help but start to get worked up anytime I read about somebody who wants to buy an Elcan SpectreDR. I've been using different variants of this sight for the last several years, and have absolutely no faith in the system. Every generation of the sight that we have used has come with several bad apples in the bunch. The sight I currently have on my C8 hasn't had any REAL problems with losing zero as it's "flipped," but it has a different zero on 1X than it does on 4X. There's no way to fix that. I personally use an Eotech. It doesn't have magnification, but I can hit quickly at 300-400 metres just by using holds. Not only that, we have guys with higher powered optics that can swing into action pretty quickly.

I have no experience with the SpectreOS, and I'd love to hear about how it's doing. My suggestion would have been in this order;

1: Eotech/Aimpoint with magnifier.
2: ACOG, any model with a fiber optic
3:Nightforce 1-4,
4: S&B Shortdot.

I personally would (and do!) go with an Eotech. I don't prefer it over the Aimpoint for any reason, it's just what I have. I have used the Aimpoint as well, and like it very much, but like I said, this is what I was issued. I don't even use a magnifier, but it would be the way I'd go if I wanted the extra power. I toyed with the idea of buying one, but now I'm glad I didn't bother.

The ACOG is a great sight. But really, it's just a sight that does the same job as the C79, but does it WAY better, IMHO. With the jobs that the BG & OMLT are doing, you usually get shot at from a ways out. Other than clearing compounds, there's not a whole hell of a lot of CQB. To those of you who swear by the ACOG/doc optic combo, I'm guessing most of you haven't used it for "work." I personally hate it. It doesn't feel natural to break your cheek weld to use the doc optic, ESPECIALLY when you're in a high stress situation like CQB. It takes a lot of practice to bring the gun up to look through a sight, OVER your sight.I find I usually just sight through the ACOG with both eyes open. It's more instinctive. However, the Doc optic IS an effective sight though, and is definitely good for ranges exceeding 25metres! One of my buddies uses the doc optic alone in a mount the Mat tech made for him, instead of an Eotech. I personally don't like it; I don't think it's bright enough. But it can hit whatever you're aiming at. And I don't think you need to worry about "Hostage Rescue" type shots over seas....:rolleyes:

Between the Nightforce & the Shortdot, I choose the Nightforce, but that's just me. The S&B is a great sight, and although I don't work with anyone who uses it, I have several friends who swear by it. As was mentioned though, it's one drawback in my opinion is that the rheostat doesn't get as bright as I'd like.

So you didn't answer, what is your role going to be over there?

Cheers.
