Optically Clueless

$700 for a Sightron s tac from mystic precision is your cheapest "decent" high mag scope IMO.

This, I'm fairly happy with my stac but I got it from Prophet River on their no tax/ship sale $677.

I have very high end glass and I find the stac is pretty good glass for $$$. Doesnt keep up with my TT, but it's 1/7 the cost. The dot reticle is TINY, my only complaint is lack of mil reticle and adjustments and FFP.

I just got one of these from prophet as well,3.5-16. Haven't mounted it yet though.
I'm a bit sceptic though as the other scopes I had in this price range didn't even come close to my Nightforce SHV 5-20. ( Clarity).

Others being Burris veracity 3-16 and bushnell elite 6500 3-16.

So are Nightforce really that good?

I suppose what I'm asking is are they worth the cash?

If you have a local gun store just head in and look through a lot scopes and see what you like and get a feel for what is available at what price. The saying that you get what you pay for is definitely true but once you reach a certain price point the differences are less obvious. The point of diminishing returns holds for scopes just like anything else and it comes down to how much you want/need to spend. If $1000 buys you a scope you really like and works great for your purposes will spending $3000 get you a scope 3 times better? That is a question only you can answer.

I've only had a few scopes in the $700-1000 range. Bushnell elite 6500,Burris veracity , Zeiss HD ,sightron stac . None of those are as clear as the SHV. The SHV was double the price though.
Since I've sold the SHV I'm never quite satisfied with the others I've owned or have. I suspect this would be the same with even higher end optics.
If the stac dont pan out I'm just gonna bite the bullit and get another SHV or a VX6 3-18.

I think the SHV is a really nice scope for the money and maybe the sightron S111 also. Hirsch precision has both and are good to deal with.

Right now I`ll be putting this on an SKS

I personally wouldn't bother with buying an expensive target scope until you have a rifle that warrants one. I've had a few SKS's but I would never put a 6-24x target scope on one, it would be a complete waste... maybe a red dot if you have some sort of 'tactical stock'. But if you really want glass on top of it maybe one of those Bushnell elite fixed 10x mil dot, as its cheap enough, has decent enough glass and has great reviews of being reliable and would also be a decent start on a .223 or .308 bolt gun out to 3-400 yards... just my $0.02

This x100

After a little more poking around I`m starting to lean towards something along these lines as a sort of compromise:

http://mysticprecision.com/2016/04/...and-3-16x42-performancevalue-out-of-the-park/

Sounds like either would be a pretty good fit for my intended purpose even if they lacks the upper magnification levels I ideally think I`d like
I have one sitting on my bench(3-16) haven't mounted it yet . I hope it's clearer than the Burris veracity 3-16 that I recently had.

That's what I've got the 3-16 moa reticle my ar-15. Really happy with it. Only major gripe is lack of mil/mil and FFP. Then the stupid windage knob goes 1 to 14 instead of 1-7 L and 1-7 R but a little bit of tape can fix that.

My only other scope is a Tangent Theta so it's not really a fair comparison. But I'm fairly happy with the glass, clicks not so much but it is a 700$ scope and the TT is 7 x that.

Tricky part is I`d like to physically see the various options so I can make an informed choice

Is there anywhere in the Okanagan area?

How close to Summerland are you? That's where mystic precision is based.

Within driving distance for sure (hour or maybe a little more)

I messaged him earlier but he indicated it was mail order only, or did I interpret that wrong?

I see that the OP is ignoring the warnings about putting a scope on an SKS.

Therefore, I suggest he get a Vortex scope. That way he will be able to take advantage of their fine warranty service.

Over and over again.

We have mostly Leupold "rifleman" scopes on our rifles and are very satisfied with their performance.
Every once in a while we'll stoop to a mid range Bushnell scope (trophy, legend and above).
We were both iron sights hunters in the day but advancing age has taken its toll on the old peepers.
Our family heirloom pre 64 win 94s and savage 99s have long since been handed down to the kids.

I`ve mentioned several times that this scope will ultimately serve more than an SKS

Why would I need warranty so bad with SKS use?

Oh, I would of thought that they'd be somewhat accommodating. If you are going to be in lower mainland, your more then welcome to look thru my stac.

Thanks for the offer - If I`m over that way I`ll drop you a line for sure

Food for thought - thanks (goes off to google)

Because the SKS with beat your scope six ways to Sunday. Don't spend a dime "upgrading" an SKS, and definitely don't spend spend money on a good scope for it. It's a backline battle rifle, don't pretend it's anything more. Get a Vortex and use and abuse the warranty.
