Optics for service rifle?

Has anyone used this or a similar ballistic reticle for SR? I like the idea of not adjusting elevation knob for known ranges.

I had good luck as Bolivar indicated, but it does have pros and cons. I think it is a matter of getting used to it, but you do need to make sure your ammo and your barrel length matches the manufacturers assumptions. Dialing a precise tested elevation for your rifle and load is definitely more accurate, but I am just trying to keep things simple. For my purposes it is working well for me!

Going to be trying out a new scope, a 6500 1 1/4-8; has 17 minutes of elevation per turn. That is more than enough in one revolution for 100m through 500m. This should reduce the opportunity to be out one revolution.

I think the bigger risk is going to be accidentally pulling the turret up and losing your zero when rushing to make an adjustment. That is the one "feature" of the capped 6500 scopes that turned me off of their new 1-6.5x scope.

That is certainly a consideration. Time will tell. Too bad the pull up detent is not a really firm one. The scope seems to be a good one, otherwise. Will have a careful look, see if I cannot determine a way to lock it, once set.

I just picked up a 30mm Millett 1-4 from Natchez for about $210.

The reticle is a tiny dot for precision work and a circular reticle I find good for CBQ. used it once. I like it.

I have recently, purchased a Leatherwood Hi-lux and have been shooting it bit, finally have it adjusted right on my rifle and getting the hang of it and figuring out how to dial it in.

So far I really like it. It has a illuminated Reticle, and magnification is 1-4x

$399 from wolverine supplies so it was in my price range, all other scopes I saw were running$599-800 even $1200 so it is affordable.

I was looking at one of the new 1-6.5x FFP ones again at LeBaron's today. They are a really nice scope otherwise. Lets us know if you find a way to lock down the turrets. I didn't see any way to remove the to install a set screw or anything.

Great scope, have had mine for about 2 years. Holds zero and the zero stop on the elevation is the cats a$$.

Maybe the turret cap snaps in place and is not removable. At a glance, it looks as if there might be an applied disc top dead center; maybe there is a secret underneath. The scope certainly appears to have potential. Shot a basic zero today. A characteristic that could be problematic in some situations is that it has lots of eye relief. I mounted it with a Burris PEPR, which worked out very well. In other circumstances, it could be difficult to get it far enough foreward.

Haven't studied the turret yet, but used the scope yesterday for an intensive carbine clinic at ranges as close as 2-3m. At 1 1/4x it worked very well for close range fast and furious. No trouble shooting both eyes open.

Not available. They're being re-designed to be true 1x, a little shorter and a little lighter. Shot Show reports say the new version will cost around $4k (like the CQBSS and Short Dot). Your best bet for a 1-8x is going to be the new USO that will be around $1900 for the FFP version and $2500 for the DFP version. Should be available by summer.

The 1-10x IOR is available from CSS Optics here in Canada. I believe the 1-10x March is also available from Kelby's.

Hi Kombayotch
Do you know how to contact CSS Optics? I searched through CGN & Google and came up with nothing. FYI Kelby's is about to apoint a Canadian distributor for the March optics so it will be a bit before they will be available. No indication of who it would be from Kelby's in the email.

Thanks

Turns out that the March 3-24x42 FFP is a nice little scope for shooting service rifle. Size wise, it's in between the Leupold VX-R Patrol 3-9x40 and the Mark 4 3.5-10x40. It's about the same weight as a Leupold Mark 4 3.5-10x40. The tube and bell are about the same size, but it's 1" shorter in length and the turrets are lower profile and have a zero stop. The thick outer bars of the reticle make it usable at low power. They bracket the "wrist watch" on a Fig. 11 at 25 yards.

Well, I an revisiting this topic again for the ??? time... LOL

Some new considerations are:

* must have true 1x magnification (something to do with balance being affected by vision -- an important factor when running and gunning)
* must have a reticle that will allow hold-off aiming from 15 yards to at least 300
* minimal parallex
* great clarity
* protective caps for turret nobs

What are the winners using (JP Recoil Eliminator with Zeiss Varipoint 1-4X, but information is old... http://www.triggerfreeze.com/docs/2006/IPSC_Rifle_norway.htm)?

While equipment cannot work miracles, it can greatly increase a competitor's performance. While the best CFSAC shooter may use a 4x power scope, he likely does not have my aging eyes that often are challenged seeing orange marks on black from the 500 yard line with 4x magnification.

This is the scope that I am looking for:

* true 1x magnification, but an still evaluating 1.5 (or less) magnification, due to the Zeiss Varipoint 1.5x-6x and Elcan SpecterDR 1.5-6x.
* go to 10x magnification, but considering 6x maximum
* have a reticle that will allow hold-off aiming from 15 yards to at least 300
* minimal parallex (15 yards to 500 yards)
* great clarity
* protective caps for turret nobs
* illumination (for dark rainy days)
* zero stop (because I don't want to crank the turrets more than necessary)

My biggest issues with my current Vortex PST are:

* Parallex (improvements fix my need to have a consistent check to stock placement)
* Magnification (greater magnification improves my ability to see at further distances)
* Protective turret caps (fixes possibility of accidental changes to turret settings)
* First Focal Plane (FFP) allows me to learn hold offs irrespective of magnification settings

I have narrowed it down to 3 choices:
- Burris MTAC 1-4
- Millet DMS 1-4
- Vortex Viper PST 1-4

I did a lot of research and read that Burris is the best reticle for fast target acquisition at least up to 200 yards. Not sure how it will work beyond that (my guess is from there on maybe the Vortex reticle is more useful). From user reviews the Burris MTAC has extremely good eyebox that is very forgiving, specially compared to the Millet. So yes teh Burris is at this point my first choice with the Millet (price is the best for this one and the reticle is very nice as well) second and finally the Vortex PST cause is the most expensive and I am not that convinced about the reticle.

I know there are lots of other options but at a higher price range. For $500 or less I think these 3 are ok. I would love to hear opinons from other users.

So after NSCC how do you like the Bushnell. I'm toying with the idea of upgrading my SR scope cause I'm afraid my Falcon will go tits up like yours did.

The Bushnell SMRS look tempting but the ease of slipping the cap up and coming off your zeros looks like a deal breaker to me.

What are your thoughts?

What features are you looking for? What magnification range? Reticle preferences? Do you want the replacement to also be in mils?

between 1 and 10 magnification, leaning on the lower end being more important. I like the 1.5 low end on my Falcon.

Reticle, something with full width horizontal and vertical at least from the center down to the bottom. Not a fan of the Vortex PST reticle. Seems to small to use for lead on movers (but then maybe I am using too much lead anyway :D)

MRAD or MOA does not matter. I covert Mils to MOA in my head anyway cause most correction input is provided in MOA anyway.
