Hi guys,

I'm in the market for an inexpensive yet decent bolt action fun/practice shooting plinker.

Right now I have 2 rifles I'm seriously looking at but wouldn't mind other suggestions.

Savage MK II FV

Pros: Like the look of it, good reviews so far both on the action, precision and decent finish

Cons: Hate the stock and its synthetic.

Norinco NS522

Pros: Kinda like the look of it, good reviews on action and precision. Ok stock, made of wood.

Cons: Not the best finish, hard to find replacements, bolts for sling and/or bi pod are oddly placed

Like I said, really open to suggestions and comments, they're both about $250, would like to stay in that range. If I had the xtra I would probably go for a CZ or a MK II TR but I ain't got that kind of money right now.

Thx!

Out of the 2, the Savage will have the best support and finish. The Norinco on the other hand can be a project gun later and become something great apparently.

Personally, I'd say Savage for an inexpensive starter but my Norinco Lever is really warming me up to the company. (Needed a lot of polish to get it working smoothly but out of the box it worked pretty well and is crazy accurate.)

--Forgot to add. There is a new low price bolt from Ruger that just came out called the American. Heard some great things about it and its accuracy but it comes with a synthetic stock.

Of the two, I'd go with the Savage hands down. Better product, made in Canada.

If you like the stock on the Norinco, maybe it's worth looking at the Savage MkII G. Very similar stocks.

you wont regret the savage even the stevens are accurate
I just bought another savage yesterday went with the mark II TRR SR and the fit and finish is awesome seem much higher quality than my stevens so cant wait to get it out to the range
and I didn't like the synthetic stock on the stevens or savage but I glassed mine and it was fine

I handled the American recently and its a good gun the stock does not feel cheap or flimsy at all its a synthetic stock not a cheap plastic

I have both. Haven't had a chance to shoot the Norinco yet but hear I will be more than impressed with accuracy. Extra mags for the Norinco are not available at this time and I imagine warranty work would be harder to have done. These are suppose to have match chambers and hammer forged barrels. Pretty good deal for $250.
As stated before the Savage is going to be your better choice for warranty and parts. The Savage I have is a 17 HMR so I can't compare accuracy between the two. I know people with Savage 22's and they are accurate rifles with ammo they like. Also , made in Canada.
If you want a little more info on the Norinco check out Father's thread in this forum. He has taken the time to post pictures and a great write up of mods he has done to his NS 522 in pretty good detail. He's the reason I bought the NS 522 in the first place.
For a first rifle I don't think you could go wrong with either one.
Scott...

Another vote for Savage. My MKII G is uber-accurate even with the pencil barrel. Other than adjusting the trigger, I only replaced the stock and that was only because the original stock got soaked with flood water.

Yeah both a mosin nagant and a sks are option I consider for bigger but still affordale shooting but I really want to go 22lr first.

Now you guys are pushing on the safe side, i'll have to hold the savage again to see if I can get used to that stock. I just wish I had the money for the TR or at least that the boyds tacticool were available to import... That would give me later options.

I know, I'm just really confortable with a more verticale grip kind of stock, plus I can't deny I like the look. The rimfire hunter doesnt look bad tho.

I'll take a look at the BV.

Since you asked about apples, I suggest oranges! Gotta love forums...

I would consider any of the older gems out there. Mossberg, Remington, etc...I find the 'ol gems are of a quality that is tough to get affordably today. Many can be had for less than your 2 choices, and are no slouch accuracy-wise.

Sigh, too many .22's, and so little time (and budget)

I will certainly look what I can get my hands on when I will be able to access the exchange forum. I haven't had much luck locally and since I'm a noob I gotta make some research every time I find something ...

I have read great things about marlins but haven't found one that spark my attention yet.

Gotta say I really like my Savage Fv! Got rid of the cheap stock and got a Boyd's thumbhole...made a lot better gun out of it. Its a tackdriver too...love it!

have a look at the new Ruger American Rimfire, i picked one up and love it!

ive got the high end Savage and i prefer it over that one.

its got the synthetic stock and i normally do not like them but i like this one.
if you are totally against them you can get a wood stock from Boyd's for like $90.

i think it cost me $315 taxes in for it last month.
