ORA CQBm8 AAR

36 brave souls took part in the spookiest CQB match this year today on Halloween. Everyone showed up and unpacked in the dark. The headlamps casting an eerie glow over the range.

The day stayed cool and the air heavy but the sun did peek out for a moment. Not long enough to dry the ground for Relay 1’s modified prone though. The din of the helicopters in the distance played with all the electronic ear muffs.

Thanks to everyone who helped out and the competitors who showed up to shoot the match. We’ve got one more match this year before all the AR’s hibernate for the winter on November 28. If you’re interested come and try it out. Register in the Erich (oracqbmd@gmail.com). Guaranteed to be the coldest of the year with a chance of snow, fingers crossed. We had 8 first time shooters out today, never too late to give it a try.

Once again a fun shoot. Had issues with double feeds, so my score won't be great, but still a blast. Anyone have ideas for my double feed issue? m3 pmags that I have used with this rifle for the last 3 matches with no failures... until today. Colder temperature? See you all at the November shoot!

I use Mobil 1 synthetic as my lube year round. I've seen it work wonders on pistols in the cold at IPSC. It works for me.

Great match, it only got cold once, just after the break, but that was nothing compared to doing it in March. I brought a newbie out and he had a blast. Thanks to all for their efforts, it is appreciated.

Amazing first timer experience. The weather was overcast and chilly but stayed dry for the morning.

Big thanks to Erich, Tim and the gang who make these events possible. My buddy, Montreal Shooter, and I chose this as our first CQB event after trying out one of TacticalTeacher's CQB clinics (got your pen?). I was complete noob and was apprehensive about how welcome we'd be and how we'd be able to fit into the rhythm of an event that has been running for several years and was wrapping up its season. Its always intimidating trying to get started in a new hobby and to try to "break in" to a competitive series with established groups and very defined procedures and safety protocols.

I needn't have worried, without exception, we were made to feel welcome and supported by the CQB family. The most important item is safety. All rookies were squaded up and paired up with a veteran. Tony W was my guide for the morning. It was a great experience. I was led through the course of fire and provided lots of advice on strategy/safety/gear. The day started with the safety briefings followed by some dry runs and live fire excercises to get the kinks and cobwebs out (and let the noobs like me see what we were in for). I was warned about the pace. Fast is an understatement. So many things to try and get squared away within the first hour - course of fire, load outs, positions, exposures. The mental and physical stress for a newbie is pretty high at the start but then gradually drops to a persistent mild panic for the rest of the morning :).

There is very little downtime or breaks. If you are not shooting, you are being safety for your shooter. If you are not actively being the safety the you are either scoring/patching or bombing up your mags. The pace never stops. The morning was soon over and the day was done. It was a great way to learn your limits and identify what needed to get sorted out back home for the next match (apparently I am completely unable to shoot accurately and walk at the same time).

For those thinking about it, afraid of not being prepared, not having the "right" gear, not fitting in - do not worry about any of that. The CQB crew are a welcoming and supportive group of organizers and participants who will do their best to make sure you are safe, squared away and having fun in this event. As long as you have reliable equipment , safety-minded perspective and an instructable mind you'll be fine. I'll be back in November for sure.

This describes the CQB experience exactly. To use a paraphrase from another group I hang out with "Just show up". This is the end of my second season with CQB, and it is now my number 1 favourite shooting event. With only 4 guys in each relay there was no time to stand around. Cold? Not when you are constantly running around with targets, shooting, scoring, patching or trying to squeeze in a quick piss stop. Gear is important, you can have a look and see what works for everyone else, but in the end you won't know until you strap it on, run around and then shoot from that damn modified prone. I'm on version three of my gear, gone from a vest to a plate carrier and now running just plastic belt pouches on a standard IPSC style two piece belt (I 3D print them because I am cheap, and like to keep changing the colours).

I was also pleased to see the number of poppies being worn, respect is something this world could show a little more of.

See you all on Nov 28, and remember, check how your gear fits on top of your winter gear before you get there!

And, what would a match be without some idiot losing something... well that idiot was me, if you found a Fenix 900 lumen USB rechargeable flashlight on the kit line please let me know.

Thanks,
Steve

That sucks Bugout! I remember losing a Surefire E2.... Was really displeasing. Hopefully it's found and returned to you.

In true idiot fashion, my Fenix light turned out to be in the last place I looked... again... bottom of my stupid range bag which has way too much crap in it. Sorry for the alert. I am able to see in the dark again.

Buyout looked good with blue this match.

Thanks ;) I wonder what colour it will be on Nov 28th? I've moved the pink furniture to Mrs Bugout's AR for her next shoot.

The 3D printed gear is working out very well, I've had no failures and it is lightweight, easy to put on and take off and it will fit on top of my cold weather gear. It doesn't get many points in the tacticool class, but then again nobody is shooting back at me at the moment. I'm setup for AR type mags (the standard 30 rounders, LAR, and XCR).

I'm working on VZ58 mag carriers, they are proving to be a bit more challenging.

Anyone know when the Stats will be posted ?

It's probably going to take a bit of time to compile. Since there was no stats person on site, one of the shooters took it upon himself to wade through all of those match slips, with all of the chicken scrawls on them, and come up with the match statistics. Kudos to him for taking on such a daunting task.

^^big thanks to Richard for doing so!
