ORA's CQB Matches - Getting ready...

My double pouches are TT, I just cranked the elastic down and they are better. Much flatter with only one mag each.

Cheaper and let's you keep the same set with no change to muscle memory. That's why I liked the idea so much and when I'm done I put everything in the range bag and take it home to clean. Makes for a really easy go bag.

what do you guys think of my set up here?

BFG SOC-C padded belt
3 x HSGI taco rifle mag pouches
2x HSGI taco pistol mag pouches
High Ground gear dump pouch
5.11 thumbdrive holster on a drop leg platform

I am thinking to move the dump pouch a bit to the left. What do you guys think? :)

I think you should run it and see how it works for YOU. There is a certain amount of personal taste/fit that goes into kit setup and a lot of that can only be developed through use. Since we are talking ORA CQB in this thread, your dump pouch position is not critical. Mags drop to the ground. If you are taking the time to put each in your poach as you go, well, lets just say you will likely have rounds left over at the end of each stage.

Also, for ORA CQB you will need 4 rifle mag pouches and 1 pistol mag pouch at a minimum IMO. We at least you will need space to hold 4 rifle and 1 pistol mag for quick access during a mag change. Any stages with pistol start with one of your two mags in the gun. Similarly with all stages you start with one rifle mags in the weapon so you don't need the starting mags to be in quick access pouches.

lurking on the fringes, will start picking up various items in the spring. CQB sounds a lot less "prissy" compared to other formats.

Yes, CQB is is less "uptight" when it comes to rules on gear and equipment compared to some other shooting disciplines. That's actually part of the fun for some. Let your inner mall ninja out if you want to. :)

Is this CQB arena more ad hoc, occurring on the "whims" of those willing to do the prep/organizing compared to what appears to me as the more structured IPSC/IDPA formats? That is what I am inferring from this thread. If so, it is more interesting to me right now than the others given what appears to be a more relaxed "just have fun" environment.

....... I'd be starting out with a DPMS AR-15 and Norinco 1911A1 .45 sidearm. I'm looking into sling, belt, holster, mag holders, etc. for an initial set-up, so have found this thread very interesting so far. I'm inclined to just go with a belt versus any vest at this time until I find out more from actual experience.

Before I got into CQB I bugged the hell out of Bolivar and Hungary/Tactical Teacher, all via PM and emails here. They offered a wealth of advice and always said to "Just get into the game".

So I did, and that is the kind of people you will shoot with in matches. Everyone helps everyone else.

I have a lot of friends now because of it, and if my regular shooting mates cannot attend, I am just as comfortable shooting with others.

It is regimented, but it is a blast.

Winter sucks ass in between seasons.

On our first point I would say, yes....and no. The events are VERY organized from a safety and administration aspect. The sport is young, developed by the ORA and is slowly starting to spread so there is no bureaucracy like exists with IPSC/IDPA. I can't actually imagine there ever will be.

As for your gear selection ideas, yup, run what you got and try it from there. Spend as little as you can until you can get some matches under your belt (no pun intended) and see how you would like to modify your kit to work better for you.

The CQB match follows a fixed course of fire; the match will be the same every time you shoot it. The proceedures and the format are the same every time you shoot it. There is nothing ad hoc about CQB.

Yes, many/most people do go there to "just have fun", but make no mistake; it is a competition and there are people there to compete.

Are the courses of fire posted somewhere? I found the Service Rifle details but not for CQB. It would be great to do some practice this winter at my local range!

Happy New Year....

Time to start going through your gear while sitting at the reloading bench!

Time to evaluate your gear and see if all of it worked for you last season!

Cheers and keep helping da noobs!
