Ottawa Hungry M14 Clinic Sat 20 Mar 2010 Debrief Here!

Damnit! I'm still waiting for my rifle to show up. I'd love to join in, but without a rifle, I feel I'll miss out on the whole experience.

Let me see if I'm clear that weekend and I might be able to take you.

I forgot that in Montreal it's only one car per 10 people. :p

Anyways, if anyone from Montreal decides to come by Train, the station is on my way, and I could pick them up around 7:00 and return them for about 18:00.

I can bring a vise, but it's just my bench vise. It's got nasty jaws. I won't bring it unless requested though.

Hmmm, don't know if that would be a problem or not. Add padding maybe?
I also have a Garand receiver that I would like to barrel, for that i have the barrel block and receiver wrench.

Hungry would this vise that Rotorwing_Savior mentions be ok for the barreling and other indexing work??

It's very similar to this. It has alternate jaws for pipes, etc. I'm sure that with wood blocks it would be fine.

We could drill some holes in the clubhouse tables, or the bar. Hmmm, better not do that. I don't know what kind of torque is required for a barrel nut, or whatever. I might have some 1" ply I could mount it to. Just hold it in place?

Sounds like it'll be a blast.

I'd be coming, but I don't have wheels (university student, no car right now :()

Actually, if anyone that is going would be able to give me a lift, I'd really appreciate it. :)

I'm willing to go even without a rifle (still waiting for it), just for the learning experience. Ar180shooter, where in Ottawa are you? I might be able to give you a lift if I can follow along with you. I'm in Orleans.

That's good that we can hook up AR180shooter. PM me if you are stuck. Will be booking a hotel in DT Ottawa soon.

That vise is perfect, but I'm not sure that a B&D Workmate will do the trick. Scared to ruin someone's Workmate or the club's table.... I miss the Edmonton clinic because there are so many M14 lovers who work in the oil patch and it's too freakin' easy to bring a service truck and portable welders... ha ha ha

I'm stuck in Bantario! :runaway:

What about mounting the vise on a board and clamping it to something?
I know we wouldn't want to clamp onto part of a table top or bench that is too much of an overhang because the torque would flex it greatly.

Ok just had a talk with my father, and mentioned about the vise.
He suggested mounting the vise to about 2 inches of hardwood, and countersinking the nuts. That way the vise could then be clamped to a bench or table and wouldn't mar the surface.
He also mentioned mounting the vise so that the jaws would be perpendicular to the length of the board. This way when we tighten the barrel it would be harder to tip the bench or table.

As long as it's ok with Hungry, it's ok with me. It might be helpful to have a second pair of hands too. :) Would you be coming down the 174, if so, we could meet somewhere around the St Laurent shopping center. PM me if this would work or if you have an alternate idea.

Ar180shooter, I'm coming from Aylmer Qc, where are U about in Ottawa, maybe we can connect.... LMK.

I'm right by CFB Ottawa North. I'm guessing you'll be taking Champlain Bridge, then go over to the 417 via Island park drive and Carling? Since I'm on the other side of town, it might be difficult to connect.

Thanks,
Ar180shooter
