Ottawa Norinco M14 clinic - any interest?

In a fit of generousity, I am willing to meet up with any Ottawa, Eastern Ontario or West Quebec Norinco M14 owners to spread some of the lessons I picked up at Hungry's last M14 clinic. I'm not a gunsmithing expert, but I think I am at least as smart as anyone else on the forum, and I have the advantage of exposure to Hungry's tips and tuning.

The idea is for owners to bring what they own, for the group to move from flash suppressor to buttplate, inspecting and examining their rifles. Looking for the obvious places to snug up or loosen off, parts to replace (and why), and what little improvements can be made by the owners. The 1965 US Army Preventive Maintenance Manual would be the teaching reference, with interspersed ####-loss avoidance strategies from Hungry's clinic. The teaching objective would be to get all participants on the same page, and hopefully on paper. Test firing as circumstances permit.

We'd need a place to meet, some chairs, 6' tables, and lights in a place where 'guns can be spoken'. Fees TBA, and I'd encourage a flow-through donation to the OSA. This has to happen in Aug for me, and we know Sept and Oct are back to school and pushing hunting seasons.

Who wants to help? Suggestions?

If its in the Ottawa area, I don't think that it would be practical for anyone to drive back to my place to do barrel work........
Don't forget the OSA practice/fun match on the 18th of August. Half the day will be M-14 oriented. Other half will be more AR oriented.

Tiriaq: With your shop 5hrs away, that is part of the problem for an Ottawa clinic. We can talk over what has to be done, ####-loss prevention strategies, listen to the tuning fork (you might have missed that demonstration), and do the front to back educated inspection. But without a shop to fix the problems, all we can do is identify the at home easy fixes. For the barrels out of index or flash eliminators to be cut off, there aren't many options.

Frankly I hadn't thought about the clubhouse in Smiths Falls until it was mentioned. Good idea. I'm going to suggest 19th or 26th of Aug as a first suggestion. Sunday is a less errand-intensive day for me. Would we need a club RO to run the range for nonmembers to shoot?

I have to withdraw the 19th of Aug. There are other plans for that day. But the 11/12 and 25/26 of Aug are still good.

Operational Shooting Association

What is the OSA?

This is the Operational Shooting Association. They were getting very little cooperation from the Ontario Rifle Association. The organizers found their most productive shooters weren't interested in politics; and wanted to go to well-run matches with a chance of winning. They train to compete in the military's service conditions matches within the DCRA program. Tiriaq, Hungry and TimK are the most recognizable CGN names.

The range is available on Sunday Aug 26. Good for me. Any huge conflicts we need to consider before announcing the M14 mini-clinic?

Hmm? Shoot and wear a funny hat, or wear a kilt and listen to bagpipes?

As for you in a kilt, I will demand a blanket draped on your 6' folding table so there are no unexpected 'sightings' if I have to recover a dropped tool off the floor.

Complete M14 newbie (with new M14) - was very sorry to miss Hungry's clinic in July... so although my wife may file for divorce as weekend suggested has already been booked, you can put me down as a tentative 'yes' for the 26th.

I have a strong return spring that day too, so I hear you brother. The plan would be to get the clubhouse open 0830'ish for a 0900 start to accommodate those guys travelling longer distance, then work together through the morning and be on the range noon'ish to see if we made any improvements. Range time is the open ended variable, so a guy could skin out then if he had to.
