Our First POLYMER Handgun purchase

... Don't get an XD; parts are unavailable and they haven't had a very good track record in any trials they have entered. ...
really? have a look here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M36x4qh7tsc
skip to 3:48 for a summary of torture tests. The name is eXtreme Duty.

I have not tortured my XD9, unless you count matches in the blazin' Arizona summer sunshine, above 110F (43C) ;)
6846 rounds, most my own reloads, with not one issue.

Have not required any parts so cannot comment on availability of parts

Get your hands on each model before you buy. (What fits me best - the 23 - might not be the best choice for you.)

As soon as you pick them up and point them, you'll know.

Holy Cow! Now that I know what the XD stands for I will rush out tomorrow and get one! Who knew? Where were all the magazine ads to tell me this?

It's great that you are getting good results from your individual gun but...

Why does the XD platform fail out of every contract competition it enters?

I gota delema. I need a 10 mm glock 20 doesnt deel as good as the colt delta elite. Colt double the price.... So little joice

if you want o good polymer pistol, I'd go for H&K in 40SW (USP, P30, P2000)
I've shot all of them, but nothing is like a H&K

What he said, try your hand around a USP they are not for everybody, but if it fits you you'll never look back. If it doesn't fit you just grab a P30.

I like Glock and shoot them well, I shoot a M&P well but I don't like them. The others I never shot so I wouldn't know.

Once you check out a HK everything else will feel of lesser quality for a very simple reason, they are.

If you go Glock go full-size, unless you are allowed to buy prohib, if you have that option than you need one of each size :)

I personally prefer the 3rd gen but that's just me.

OP- Can't go wrong with either Glock or M&P. I have both and would give slight edge to Glock for no real specific reason.

Carbine kit! That's really all that would swing me Glock from M&P. Plus, saves explaining to non-gun-nutz. Everyone knows what a Glock is.

4th Gen Glock is the first one that fit my hand, though. I come from a long line of 1911 genetics, apparently.

Since we all know that advertising never lies..

I know of at least three SMEs off the top of my head who specifically recommend against XDs: Dr. Garry Roberts (see the link I posted above), Todd Green, and Larry Vickers.

Your XD may not have broken yet, but others will and you cannot get spares for them in Canada. Unavailability of OEM parts is one thing with a generic design like a 1911, but it is a show-stopper for a proprietary design.

Have both Glock and M&P...I prefer the M&P with a slight edge.
Grip is more comfortable and the beaver tail gives you a nice high grip.
So if you don't plan on buying both...go to your LGS and try the grip and trigger pull.
You'll definately know which will fit you better.
As for performance...I'd say it's a tie.

No no no, buy the M40A1 Steyr pistol.
I handled and fired the glock and MP, really snappy!
Fired the M40A1, oh boy, nice recoil like .22lr. Try it. It's a winner!

Why do you think Glock has so many generations (they must be up to about generation 984 by now) they haven't managed to get it right yet:nest:

I like the Gen 4 Glocks in .40 but I think the M&P 40 is also a good pistol. Much like how Glock ####ed up their Gen 4 9mms by putting .40 parts in them, S&W puts .40 parts in their M&P 9 and won't fix it unless you complain, but the .40 is, of course, immune to this issue.

The Gen 3 G22 runs well unless you do something really outlandish, like mount a light on the light rail.

H&K has a good track record but I don't personally own any because I can't get my head around their triggers.

Sig makes a polymer and it should be avoided.

The XD is also a great gun to watch somebody else buy, particularly if it's not somebody you like very much. The XDM is a bit better but overall they have serious issues and I wouldn't spend my money on one, nor would I if they dropped the price down to fifty bucks a gun.

Those are all the guns that spring to mind. If you can stand HK triggers, they are reliable pistols. If you trust M&P barrels, and you can either get Apex parts to sort out your M&P trigger, or you can just handle a mushy reset, the M&P 40s are pretty good. The Glock Gen 4s have issues, but the 40s have fewer issues than the rest of them, and I believe the issues with the Gen 4s are becoming less frequent.

So all the options that spring to mind have fleas, but three of them have fleas that are pretty tolerable.

Personally I would go with the Gen 4 Glock, but I would also probably wait another 6 months to year until I think they can really be trusted.

But the M&P .40 is a good option as well, unless you have a morbid fascination with having your chamber stay attached to your barrel.

And I also don't hesitate to recommend the P30, particularly to people who consider the trigger to be an unimportant part of a pistol.

I was in my local gunshop this weekend. Handled the S&W MP in .40 and even in a small backstrap it just felt awkward, no love connection. Glock Gen 3 was the same deal, it felt like I was holding a block of wood. P30L was nice, but out of my price range and lacks availability of parts/accessories.

But the Glock Gen 4? OH BABY was it good! So good I brought her home... :D

I'm a small handed shooter and it felt great. Best bet try 'em all out and see what feels right.

I'd never hesitate to recommend the Glock anyday. They're dead reliable and simple, lots of accessories and parts available and of course, its a Glock.

Cheers!
