I have a side-by-side 12 gauge shot gun. When the father-in-law died it was in a leather gun case and the out side has lots of surface corrosion with widely scattered pitting, the bore is in great shape without any pitting. I got a pit gauge from the plant and the pits are less than 0.001” you can hardly feel them but you can really see them. Would it be safe to sand these out, would there be enough metal left? If I sanded down the barrel enough to take down the high points in the general corroded area would it stick out like a sore thumb?

You can very safely remove pits of .001 or less, and it would likely be quite easy to do. However, doing so will remove whatever surface oxidization is present, be it bluing or patina, and will show up as the bright silver of the underlying steel. Ultimately the value of the rifle will change based on it's value to you. That value to you will change depending on whether the value is collectible value, sentimental value or monetary value. Post some pics to we can see what it is and what kind of shape it is in.
