I spent some time restoring a Russian Capture Mauser 98 from P&S to use as a regular shooter. The stock is battle scarred for sure but the gun cleaned-up pretty good IMO.

Most important - the bore looks great. Bright with deep rifling as I had asked from Jean. I took the f'ugly shellac off and did a tung oil finish with a bees wax rub. Looks OK - didn't go crazy on the stock restoration. Used some touch up cold bluing to get rid of the electropenciling and took the Russian blue off where it shouldn't be.

Picked up a few goodies from Landser - repro strap, cleaning rod, sight hood, capture screws, etc and she is good to go. Hopefully I can print off some nice targets and make a range report soon.

Nice eagle and Swastikas on this gun.

German military ammunition - 1944 steel cased on German stripper clip.

The stock doesn't look that much different from the untouched Russian stock, but the gun looks pretty kickass. (Course, ALL German mausers look kickass)

I want some of that German ammunition. :runaway:

Nice job.
Jean has some nice stuff and he's a really accomodating guy.

Can you show some pics of how the cold blue worked on the electro penciling?

Man, that looks nice. I plan on passing through Quebec on the family vacation, have to find a way to entertain the girls while I visit a couple shops, P & S is definately on the list...

By the way, your sling keeper is on backwards ;)

Is it? I got my instructions from here: Installing a 98k sling

EDIT: &*@$ - yes the keeper is reversed left to right.

what kind of markings makes you say if it's a capture or not?
i'll may have to take a closer look to my K98...

The "X" (crossed Mosin-Nagant rifles) above 9181 is the Russian import mark.

Looks good, I'll have to pick one up. Let us know how it shoots as soon as you get back from the range.

How good is the headspace on these rifles, generally?
