I putting a new barrel on my old p14 , my question is i really want to go .308 , my other rifle is 308 and my buddies are so alot easier and cheaper for reloading. I have searched all over this site and got mixed answers, some say they are the same some say it will not work. so which is it?? can i find a m17 bolt and change my mag so i can run 308 or should i just stick to the 300wm i was going to go with?

don't see why not.. I have a whelen with a M17 bbl and coned breech on a 303 action(p14) seems to work just fine

sweet i was hopeing it would work i will start tring to find a bolt. i tried the 308 cart. in my p14 and it will pick them up if i put the cart. in the mag just right i think with some tinkering it will pick them up just fine so i just need the bolt so it will throw them out.

It'll work. I've done it on a single shot. My only concern would be trying to use the magazine. The feed rails on the 14 are wide enough for the .303 rim and work perfectly with a belted mag, but they may cause problems with a .308.

Personally, I liked your earlier .300 Winchester idea. You have the perfect action for it. This is pretty well the only miltary action that will feed and fire a .300 Winchester as is, with no fiddling. That's something special and it is worth taking advantage of.

Any plain-old Mauser '98 will handle a .308. A P-14 is unique as a true magnum-sized miltary action, so don't look a gift horse in the mouth.

You speak the truth
I have one in 300 mag and one in 375 H&H the 300 is built on a eddystone (yah yah I know "the eddystones were bad actions" LOL)
I built it with a Springfield trigger guard to make it nice and slim:)

The 375 is built on a winchester action P14 and it took some time to get it to feed properly but it works excellent now

Hard choice i but if the 300wm works much better in the mag i really don't want a single shot only. may have to go with 300wm on this one and build something else in 308 . just got to explain way i need two new rifles to the girlfriend :) may just build this p14 in to a real nice hunting rifle not that i need another. where is a source for good barrels , not so expensive as gaillard. i would go with his for my range rifle to expensive for a hunting rig. i figure syn stock and a decent barrel would make it a good hunting rig. then start saveing for a rem 700 or savage.

His original idea was to make a "precision/tactical" rifle. The argument was that .300 Win Mag is the most practical choice for that kind of rifle (requiring the least amount of gunsmithing work). Sure, a .338 Lapua or RUM would work, but it would be less practical, in my opinion.

ya the barrel is one dead soldier. at 50 yaards all 3 shots went though the target sideways, great big slap when it hits. if u look down the barrel its not even round. ya i want a long range gun , my best bud that i hunt , fish just shot the crap and drink beer with all the time is geting a savage 12?? forget which one. just came out and dealer says feb before he can get it. Ok this is going to be a budget shooter but i allready have the rifle and its taped for my bushnell. and first letter in the sil number is w so its a winchester right?. so i am thinking .30 barrel, timney trigger, #### on opening peice , and a syn stock from midway.com. how are they to deal with? if i can do the whole thing for less then a grand and it shoots as good as my buddies savage i will really make him mad lol :), the extra i save will have to go to reloading eqiup. can i reload 300wm for less then buying boxes of high end 308?

another thing can anyone suggest a good smith in nova scotia? if i go with the gaillard barrel at about $400 for the blank i want some one with a good rep putting it on. thanks again.

I have two P-17s and P-14. Currently going to have one of the P-17 redone as a 358Norma.I have gotten use to the ####-on-close.I was going to change the first P-17 over. The proper way is to reshape the cocking piece and the cam on the bolt sleeve, like the Remington M-720.After using it,like twice at the range,it's a big so what. The M-96 will get one.

But here's what I would do:
Get P-17 botttom metal and the mag box and turn the back end of the box around.P-17 and P-14 bottom metal are slightly different. This will give you the length for all the 300WM loads.
Timmy trigger
A release button from Brownells
A P-17 ejector kit from Numrich, the breakage prone part of the action.

And talk to the gunsmith, the "Enfield" action is a bit tricker to work on than the plumbing store M-700.

But don't expect to out shoot your pard,my factory Savage will shoot 1" at 300yards with the first choice powder and bullets.

Build the rifle in the calibre that you desire as you're the one laying out the cash!

Once you mix and match parts there a lot of expensive fiddling to be done to get it to shoot right. If you're looking for a target rifle check "mysticplayer" posts as he's done just about everything conceivable to the Enfield.....including getting them to shoot competitively.

If you want rimless cartridges like the 308 Win, 30-06, 308 Norms, 300WIN MAG stay with the 1917 Enfield. If you want large calibres like the 303 wildcats, 375 H&H, 378 Weatherby, 416 Rigby, 505 Gibbs, 550 Gibbs or 600 use the P14.

These are great guns, lots of after market parts and can be very accurate if built by a pro.

Is your action full military? Manufacturer?

still not sure i got about a grand to spend in the next few months and i have always wanted something noone else got. And i got a good 6x-16x- bushnell so about a grand on just the rifle. looking at the savage 12fv short action for $589 then a bipod and reloading eqiup. my buddy has the savage 12f/tr precision target model on order. How would these two compare? when i got all the cash in my hand in the next few weeks i will have to decide what to do. BUt there has been lots of help here, thanks guys. love this site.

Look, if you seriously have $1,000 to spend, you'd be nuts not to buy the brand-new Savage or Remington. We'd frankly be negligent to counsel you otherwise.

If your budget is extremely limited, however, AND you absolutely NEED top-level accuracy, then you could go for the P-14 with a custom .300 Win. Mag barrel. If you set that rig up properly, it will shoot. My 17 with a medium contour E.R. Shaw barrel in .300 Winchester cost me less than $500, all in, and it will regularly shoot less than 1 m.o.a. And an E. R. Shaw barrel is nowhere in the league of McLennan, Gaillard, etc. Not even close. My 17 is a bit ugly and heavy, but it is a joy to shoot on the range. When I burn this barrel out if a few years, I'll probably put on a McLennan or a Krieger and build a serious "tactical" rifle out of it. I've used one of those Boyd's "Varminter" stocks in the past on a 98 Mauser and found it to be excellent and cheap. I might pick one of those Boyd's stocks up for this rifle in the future to complete the package.

So if you are serious about spending somewhere close to $1,000, then definitely buy the factory rifle. The Savage would be simply impossible to beat for the price, and it's ready to go with no gunsmithing or fiddling.
