I washed everything in hot soapy water to clean the grease out. Light sanding and primed with KILZ primer.(seals oil stains etc.) Then the JD implement paint.

Its spray paint that when dries can be peeled off just like a vinyal decal. Its amazing and durable

Good painting doesn't reduce the value... people will like it because it's fun.

First off, Gross.

Second, it's your property, do what you want, don't get hung up on the opinions of guys like me (who think it'll be gross, by the way.)

Third, coat it with that liquid bed-liner stuff, like they use for trucks.

I did a laminate refurb in satin black automotive trim paint. Held up better than the original shellac finish! The key is to properly prep the surface, light/thin coats, and plenty of dry time.

If you want to paint the stock, I say go for it. I can't see the average SKS that you intend to use, matching numbers or not, to be of any historical or monetary value within our lifetimes.
